Good Natured Advice Thread (improving a business wardrobe) - Page 1451

Come on now, I never said that. But it would be nice to have some other opinions here folks!

Let's not get carried away.  Lavender puppytooth wouldn't be my first choice, but I've seen the Shibumi boys rock similar scales (though usually in light blue) to excellent effect.  Let's make the best of it, shall we?

Grenadine is a good instinct here.  My immediate choice with a navy suit for an evening event would be a black garza fina or garza piccola weave.  @bmwahba39 , do you know where to find one of those?  If not, we can help.

Call me conservative, but for an evening event with a patterned shirt, I'd go white linen or bordered white linen 10 times out of 10.

What's you shoe situation?

Thanks for the response! I do not know where I could find those, and glad you mentioned that because I'm having trouble sourcing grenadine ties in general. Is black my only option for the tie here? Even on a navy suit..?

I think I will go with the white pocket square without a doubt. It's a safe route.

Shoe situation, I have a pair of AE Strands. Should I wear them or no?

Can we possibly do a darker purple grenadine tie here?

@Claghorn is the resident tie expert, but I'd take a look at exquisitetrimmings.com whose grenadines are held in high regard and who are currently running a nice weekend discount.  @davesmith, the proprietor, is a regular here and is very helpful.  They ship from the UK, but if you have two weeks you should be fine.  Other options include Sam Hober (www.samhober) but they take three weeks.  Chipp grenadines aren't the equals of Hober or ET, but they are a good backup plan since they ship from the US.

What color are your Strands?  Black is ideal in the evening, but dark brown could be okay too.

Strands are walnut, not that dark.

I'm going to backtrack a little bit and toss out the idea of our Lavender/Lilac/awfulness shirt, just for the sake of experimentation.

If you could pick any shirt to use here, what would you go for?

I have a Light blue and white check shirt that I think might be a little more versatile here.

You may see it as group think, but nearly all of us would pick a solid white shirt as the ideal for an evening social gathering like prom.  It opens up so many other choices with regard to tie, square, and I would argue, even shoes--your Strands will look better at night with a white shirt.

If the blue check is the same scale as the lavender and you want to wear checks, pick whichever you prefer--blue is more conventional, but for me that's a personal preference.

Man, is this really still the good-natured advice thread? :roma: Poor guy is taking a beating.

That shirt is fine and it will look fine under a navy suit. Get a navy, black or very dark purple grenadine tie and a white hanky and you're good to go party and have fun.

Sure, you could swap it for a white shirt and kick the formality up a notch, but there's really nothing about your shirt to be so adamantly against it.

@bmwahba39 +1 on a solid shirt. White preferably. or very light blue

Ok, let us go with a solid white shirt with french cuffs. Let's setup a tie/square/braces combination that will look superb.

What options do we have? Let's just keep in mind again that this womans dress is champagne, so maybe stick to colors which "complement her", not match, but complement, going off of the color wheel here.

Cool man, thank you very much. I didn't think the shirt was anything out of the ordinary. It's just a light purple shirt with subtle checks...lol.

I think the shirt would be perfect for a prom.
I actually have the very same shirt with FC.

A navy grenadine tie will pair very nicely with it. Look at Chipps and grab one from there. It's a staple and will last you long after you wear out the shirt.

Great idea on the shirt. You'll look 100x better. Still, throw the idea of complimenting her colors out of your head. If she looks good nothing you wear will detract from that. If you look good, nothing she wears will detract from that either. Just worry about you.

You said it was dark purple IRL...
