Florshiems, won't make you poor. excellent shoes for afordable money.  GREAT with Denim.

Deck shoes in the summer, desert boots (Clark's, ideally) all year round, something alike to Blundstone boots in the winter. Possibly all of the above in a conservative shade of brown.

Suede oxfords (and penny loafers, in the summer) are of course perfectly acceptable, but they have several drawbacks, namely: 1. you risk passing off as pretentious, especially in a college context: this is probably less the case with the shoes I listed above; 2. decent quality oxfords are approximately thrice the price of any of the shoes above; 3. oxford wear more easily without proper care, and will look like crap if not properly look after. The usual three solutions above on the other hand require less care (cleaning/shoe trees/ avoiding liquids) and even if they look like crap you can still pass them off as a form of understatement.

Cheers,

This. Oxfords (especially black ones) are completely incoherent with jeans IMHO.
