Cool. Not my size but thanks for the link.

Agreed. I'll mention that I, when I'm weighing whether to include an ad like that, it gets a mental -5 or so to start. It has to be a very strong, established seller with good forum rep and a good reason why not (no camera, not a photographer, can't get to the item for legit reason, etc.) and/or a mention that they're happy to provide pics if nec.

I'm planning to do a Razl's FAQ post around the end of the year that will help explain my rationale for things like that.

Oh if those C&J Snowdon were my size... I'm anticipating a horrible winter after this tropical NYC week we're having.

I've gotta say, I think it's almost inexcusable in this day and age. Even the shittiest flip phones have cameras, and from a buyer perspective I would much rather have a terribly grainy photo than nothing at all.

Like this ebay auction that has been up for 2 weeks - I just got a pair of Aldens from this guys without any issues at all, but here is another listing of his...If you can afford $500 Trickers, you've at least got a camera phone of some kind.

I agree that a pic is necessary but do people really care if it's a stock pic if the item is brand new? Obviously it's critical on a used item to see real pics but on something new what's the difference?

The difference for me personally is two-folds

1). It shows the buyer it actually is NWT. Not that many people here are retailers, so actually showing the tag is a sign of reassurance.

2) it lets people see the actual product.

I know not everyone can take aesthetically pleasing product shots of garments all styled up on a dress form, but at least make an effort and post something of the actual item being put on the block for heaven's sakes.

Yep the trust is definitely something, but the quality control is another. Just cuz the tag is on doesn't mean anything. I've seen tons of misaligned stitching, uneven broguing, fabric damage, color fading on brand new items from reputable brands. If I'm going to the second hand market for a NWT item, I better make sure it's actually up to snuff.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!!!

Thank you razl for the mention! I would keep the cardigan if it fit, but I've had to size up.

I'm willing to cover shipping and offer 15% off to anyone interested who mentions the thread.

Everyone: Since I've been doing highlights I get standard questions that are worth airing out here. My future posts will have links back to this post to simplify answering them.

Note that I'm not trying to hijack the thread with a discussion about them, so to reduce chatter if you see something contentious/egregious, please PM me to see if I can straighten it out first, then resort to public airing here if you think that's better.

fyi: this was meant to be brief but grew longer than I thought it would. It is not required reading - feel free to skip! Also, I expect to update this over time.

Frequently Asked Questions about razl's "The Best of B&S (Someone Should Buy This!)" highlights:

What's your goal?To support the Styleforum B&S by helping as many buyers and sellers connect as possible.

Why do you do this? I joined Styleforum in '09 around the latter half of what was considered the "hayday" of B&S. The financial meltdown of late '08 caught the manufacturers and retailers with excess supply, SF was just cracking the mainstream, and entrepreneurs were delivering inventory to B&S of high end stuff virtually every day and I benefited greatly. While that amazing opportunistic time has passed, I still shop B&S regularly and wanted a way I could leverage that time to help others - both buyers and sellers - hopefully get some of the same type of deals I was lucky enough to get "back in the day"...

With that in mind, B&S doesn't have good mechanics for buyers to find things they want. And, even if it did, SF is a place where newbies come to learn new things - that includes being exposed to things they may not even know exist. I'm trying to assist buyers in finding things by helping sellers with product visibility.

What makes an item "the best"? The best means different things to different people at different times. I try to pick things I think are The Best for someone. That someone might be the newbie who's looking at his first pair of real shoes beyond the mall, the intermediate who's stretching for his first pair of shell, or the big timer peacock for whom those alligator boots are a must have. For every first Drake's tie buyer there's a Pink Cashmere Attolini buyer as well.

In short, your Best and my Best aren't the same; but I am trying to pick The Best for Someone, even if they don't know it yet.

How do you choose what-to/what not-to highlight? I have an informal seat-of-the-pants rating system that goes something like this (starting at 0):
  • Is it "The Best" for someone? = +3
  • Seller has pics of the actual item, the ad looks like an investment in the SF B&S community*, the seller is established/reputable, I've had good communication/dealings with the seller personally = +1 for each
  • Item is rare, special, or exceptionally beautiful or well crafted = +3
  • Item is not something that would normally be on B&S = + 3
  • Good item photography, good item description (history, backstory) = +2 for each
  • Seller states item is being resold from a previous B&S transaction at near-recoup-only cost = +1
  • Ad only has original stock pics = -3 (or -1 if seller states they are willing to post on request or has a legit reason why stock pics only should suffice)
  • Obvious, egregious flipping** = -3
  • No pics at all, Ad is only a link to ebay or other community* = -5 for each
  • My gut = anywhere from -3 to +3

Once I have a bunch of items that are +3 or higher, they get tossed into the next round-up. That usually happens about every 2 or 3 days.

* I want ads that are contributions to the community in and of themselves. Listings that are little more than "I'm selling this on ebay - see link!" are almost never Best Of.
** Sellers can charge whatever the market will bear; I have no prejudice - zero, none. In fact, I want sellers to make money, good money!, to stay in business and keep deals coming. But, in the interest of fostering deals that actually get done, if something smells of obnoxious flippery - especially if it took a good deal from B&S only to repost it with a mark-up - it tends to not make the cut. I've been around long enough to develop a sense of what smells good and bad.

Will you highlight my item? I take requests under advisement but without commitment. My goal is to be fair and try and spread highlights around as much as possible. And, no, I don't take payment for anything - please put those funds towards buyer discounts instead.

Why didn't you highlight my item? Most likely reasons:
  • It didn't make the cut due to my "points" system above.
  • I focus on new postings as they come out. If you continue to bump an old posting, I probably won't see it.
  • I focus on classic menswear, though I peek over the fence at SW&D. If yours is a trendy, cool, fashionable, or SW&D piece, it's just not on my radar unless it's amazing in a way that catches my eye.
  • To avoid spammers, I try not to include brand new members with no/low post counts, sorry.
  • I try not to re-include previous items by the same seller.
  • If your pics are hosted in any way that makes it difficult for me to reference/include in a post, it's not going to happen.

Are your posts automated/Do you do your posts by hand? I look at all the posts just like you do, one at a time. But, I wrote some non-elegant chrome plugins to assist in the picture linking, assembling, and post-back linking to eliminate as much manual cut&paste/editing as possible. A post of about a dozen items done totally by hand takes about 30-45 minutes but with my plugins I can crank out in about 10-15 minutes depending on how much I ogle along the way.

You highlighted a seller/item, what do you know about them? Probably nothing. While I myself am both a buyer and an occasional seller, my highlights are across the community and don't mean that I have had any contact with the seller myself. To be blunt, my highlights are not an endorsement of the seller or their listing in any way - they are just a "this looks great for someone!" from a fellow B&S rummager's perspective.

Who made you the supreme ruler here? Nobody! Other great SF members, buyers and sellers, started this thread; I just jumped in with gusto and have been running with it ever since. Others are welcome and encouraged to do the same!!! In the long run, the more that participate the better. Plus, all my rules + tastes mean some things get missed that shouldn't. Please help the community by spotting and linking those yourself, even if I didn't! This thread isn't mine, I'm just big participant - please join in!

Is it a good deal? That depends on you. Please research first and then ask the community for input if you are unsure.

Is it real/fake? I have experience but am not an expert. While I won't highlight anything that is clearly a fake (unless it states itself as such; like maybe an homage watch) I can be fooled just like you. Please research first and then ask the community for input if you are unsure.

Isn't that item a duplicate from a previous post? I try hard not to do this but it was an accident, it happens. If you point me at it I'll edit it out, but I'd rather focus on the next group than waste time back tracking. An extra link isn't going to hurt anyone.

Some semi-official StyleForum guidelines:
Please read the B&S rules! At the top of the page here: http://www.styleforum.net/f/6654/buying-and-selling
Styleforum officially requests that if you are using Paypal you should be paying for items as goods and services and you should not pay as a gift; also realize you will lose some Paypal buyer protections if you pay as a gift. You should never accept this if asked by a seller.

Skullduggery: I have yet to be burned on a B&S deal but others have, sometimes for real money. Given my experience, most sellers are honest and reliable, but clearly there are bad guys out there. Please use ratings, community references, and trader ratings to assist in your evaluation of a seller. I'm also a buyer just like you, and happy to pass along my input on a seller if I have any. If you are a victim of or suspect a seller to be less than honorable, please notify a forum moderator; or, if you notify me, I will pass it along to one of them.

Happy hunting!

Cheers,

Jeff [razl!]
