Help buying a slim cut charcoal suit for student on a budget!

I'm looking to buy a new suit. I already have a black Zara jacket size 36, but I didn't buy the pants with it, so the tops and bottoms don't match. It's too late to find the matching pants now, unfortunately.

Anyways, now I'm looking for a charcoal colored suit. I've seen people where charcoal suits that almost has a steelish blue tint to it, that would be my ideal color but I don't think it's that common. Do you guys think I should go for that color or just a traditional shade? There are so many different shades of charcoal I'm not sure which one is most preferable. My budget is around $300-$400. Slim fit is a must, I'm a small guy and the Zara jacket fits me perfectly.

What I need from you guys, are suggestions on where to buy this suit. There's always Macy's or Nordstrom. I'm located in San Diego. About an hour away, there is a Zara and a H&M. How would those compare with stuff like Macy's or Nordstroms? Any other stores I should try out down south? I can always check out places like Nordstrom Rack and Loehman's but it's always hard to find my size. Let me know what you guys think, thanks a bunch!

Ah! A common problem! Slim suit needed! Cheap suit needed! I suggest, first and foremost, a thorough searching of this forum for older threads of the type.

Now, the common advice is that the two brands (H&M, Zara) you mentioned are the way to go.

Also, http://thickasthievesla.com/, the owner is a member of these forums (Getsmart) and there is a pinned thread in Streetwear and Denim devoted to it, so you can learn as much as you need to. It may stretch your budget about as much as any extra tailoring would do to a RTW suit.

I sent some ebay links via PM, without knowing if you're an avid ebayer or not. If you are, and would like some more, let me know and I'll send you the search string I used.

i dont know about zara since i havent walked in there in some time but h&m (both at irvine spectrum and south coast) dont have charcoal suits right now. they have their linen suits and some pinstripe suits but the selection was slim the last i checked about a wk ago. no suits in solid colors but i imagine once summer is over they'll have replace the more casual suits though, if you can afford to wait.

for h&m, keep in mind that you will only find R length.

i'd stay away from macy's. if you're slim i don't think you'll find anything comparable, at least not for budget. anything like claiborne, club room, tasso elba, etc will probably feel sackish on you. more youthful brands like material london, INC -- you might as well just buy the h&m.

Nordstrom's half yearly sale starts this Friday? Is it worth checking out for slim cut suits? Any brands I should keep an eye out for? Let me know thanks.

South Coast doesn't sell men's clothing, at least last time I checked. Beverly Center had some charcoal suits, as did Santa Anita...

SCP does sell men's clothing, IIRC.

EDIT: A trip to the website confirms this.

Interesting, they must have added it after I'd been there last, as they only had women's at that time.

I do believe it is a relatively recent addition to that store. Oddly, the website lists two locations for South Coast Plaza, both with the same name and address, one lists just women only concepts, and the other lists women, man, and baby concepts. Last I was there, I didn't go in, but I noticed some men's clothing in the back, similar to the Zara store there. I should have gone in and checked.

the h&m store in the main SCP building is womens only. across the street at crystal court they have both mens and womens. it confused me at first too.

I second the nomination of TaT. I ordered a one button peak lapel in black from him last week. He got it in the mail today, if I'm really lucky I might see it this weekend. Get Smart is very helpful, and you'll end up with a suit that is different than what everyone else is dropping $400 on.
