Starbucks vs Dunkin' Donuts

Given the recent threads on coffee and Starbucks, I thought this somewhat long article from the Boston Phoenix regarding the Dunkin' Donuts subculture in New England would be of interest. Enjoy.

The DD fanaticism is funny because growing up in Michigan we had plenty of them around, but it was no big deal. It was the donut chain where you could also get coffee. You could go there or any of many comparable mom and pops.

but now east coasters have this huge fanaticism about it.

Hmmm....I've been in Boston for a while and all of this has escaped me. I personally prefer Starbucks, but would drink DD when there's no Starbucks around. My brother, on the other hand, can't function without a cup or two of DD's hazelnut ice coffee everyday. He thinks Starbucks is pretentious. This is probably the common attitude that those DD fanatics and blue collar workders have toward the chain from Seattle. In any case, I don't have to have one or the other. It's nice to have choices.

Dunkin's is shit. Bostonians drink it because they are stubborn mules with no taste.

I've never liked the donuts, but DD coffee is pretty good. I wish they'd make it stronger. When I buy it, and use three tablespoons per cup, DD coffee turns out well. I find it striking that although DD is considered often to be a blue collar hangout, mainly for men, the colors DD uses in its graphics are often associated with women. Personally, I think the explosive, sunset palette DD emblazons on its goody boxes, cups, and signs . . . is clever.

I was in Cambridge a few weeks ago, 7am on a Saturday morning and Dunkin' Donuts was packed. I enjoy their coffee, but could never drink it regularly. It's tastes really fake, I'd rather drink crap like Folgers as my daily coffee if it was the only other choice.

DD coffee is significantly better than Starbucks.

I always have preffered non-chain, mom and pop type places. For chain stores though, I would go to Krispy Kreme for the doughnuts and Tully's for cofee.

So you enjoy Dunkin' Donuts coffee, but you think it tastes fake and worse than "crap like Folgers."

Personally, I'll drink both Starbucks or DD. It depends on my mood. I'll admit, as a New Englander, to having a slight preference for DD, but only slight.

I enjoy it when I have it, but that is because I don't have it often since I'm only in New England a few times a year. For an everyday coffee I would rather drink crap like Folgers since it at least tastes like real coffee. After about two or three days of drinking DD coffee every day I'm tired of it. I do love their donuts though.

Folgers was the brand that Jackie Onassis preferred. Heiress, Abigail Folger was slaughtered by the Manson gang, in August of 1969. I like Folger's, as well as many other store bought brands. What I find is that if I use enough . . . which for me, is three tablespoons per cup, Folger's, Hills Brothers, Maxwell House, Chase and Sanborn, all taste pretty good.

Costco's Kirkland Colombian Supremo, in the brown can is excellent. One of the best coffees I've ever tried.

is this 4 page article about dunkin donuts coffee worth the read?

I like DD because their coffee isn't as strong as SB. Then again I don't drink coffee much because I'm a tea drinker.

Is this because they refuse wear fugly pumas and flarez?

Dunkin' Donuts is great for what it is, cheap good coffee that you can find without looking too hard. I visited Providence a few weeks back and the first thing I did was to hunt down a DD for an ice coffee and I enjoyed every sip, which is more than I can say for Starbucks. The only good Starbucks I have had was made by people I knew that worked there specially for me. I'm not a fan otherwise, but then again, I am a stubborn mule with no taste...

Are we all talking about the same Dunkin' Donuts coffee? The DD coffee in Philly tastes like milk that's been saturated with sugar, then had an eighth-cup of coffee poured into it. It's not coffee, it's a slurpee for adults. Ugh.
