first suit... completely lost in all the different styles/brands

Thread Starter

Hey gents!

i'm finally at a point in life where i need to get a suit. i've been looking online but am just worried that purchasing something blindly will only lead to a poor fit. at stores like nordstrom's or macy's, the styles that look great but cost well north of $1,000. my budget is $600-800, i'm 5'10" and ~165lbs.

is there a brand or two that are often recommended?

im in los angeles CA, can anyone recommend a reputable and affordable store to look at?

whats the difference between a "slim-fit" suit and one that is simply tailored to my physique?

Nordstrom or Brooks Brothers probably would be the right starting point. Definitely don't buy if online if you don't already know your size and have a sport coat or blazer that fits like a new suit jacket should. Almost any suit would need mild tailoring after purchase.

Can you not try 'Search', this is the third such thread today which is crazy?

You will learn far more by your own efforts rather than expecting others to do it for you.

Just put 'First Suit' in search and answer your own question.

$600-800 you'll have tons of options.

Get all your measurements and the Ebay and the Styleforum marketplace are your two new best friends.

Caruso, Canali, Corneliani, Samuelsohn are 4 names just to get you started.

But yes, please do use the search function. On an almost weekly basis are new topics created for very easy to find answers. And some of us can get a little abrasive sometimes!

Getting your size correct is only the first step. Cuts and styles vary within the same
size range. My advice: Try on as many suits as necessary in brick and mortar stores.
Then look for the exact models online or wait for the post holiday sales/.

you might find the Paul Smith "Byard" suit a good cut for your frame. not too expensive. but nice enough. in a staple blue, it's a good start.
