Ask andy what? - Page 2

Common guys; l think you are being alittle hard. Andy would receive very little commission as a result of the forum. Note: andy's forum has only [around] 20 active members and [around]1000 members in total. The fact is; the same old people are always keeping the forum active, their is not alot of new people joining the forum. lf l was a company, l wouldn't pay Andy much commission either. (His audience is too small). l think Andy pays budget rates for a company that delivers second rate service. Why shouldn't he? He gets small commissions and we get the service for free. We should appreciate this.

Well, nevermind - Andy responded last night.

Come on, what do you expect. Unless we're willing to pitch in and give money to that site so that it can become better, we don' really have the right to complain about it.
Actually I've purchased Andy's CD and I'd be very willing to ante up some scratch to get the site on a better server. I,  like most of you, find the info provided by these two forums to be quite valuable. Be that as it may, and at the risk of being redundant, I find Andy's hosting to be inadequate. Not "complaining" mind you just a bit of constructive criticisim as I very much appreciate these two sites as a resource. V-

Good Friends: Just jumped over from Ask Andy where the site has blown up. Rider, I trust you to tell us what can be done at this point to help Andy out. There's a lot of money in the forum, and I'm sure we all are willing. I spoke with Mr. Pollock and he is on board. Comolli

Since I started this thread, I should state that it's not my intention to take, take, take, and not give anything back (and I apologize if it came off that way). My frustration is in not being able to navigate around what I think is a very worthwhile site. Communication is at the root of almost all problems, and if Andy makes it clear that there are some site problems/issues, and ways to remedy it, then I'd be happy to consider them. But to just let things go on as they do, without communicating what's at stake, is to run the risk of losing people due to a (falsely) perceived lack of commitment to service. If your store's lights are flickering, you gotta' tell the customers you're gonna fix it...or ask somebody for a light bulb. Don't just let 'em walk away. I guess that's my point.

as far as i know, the purpose of his forum was not to get commission from advertisers; it was to promote and sell his book. 'guerilla marketing', i guess is what it's called. why do you think his picture is at the top of the page? (not the most flattering image, by the way.) seems to me if he wants to resolve his site problems, he should be able to do it himself. it's ostensibly in his best interest...i mean i'm certainly not going to fund his marketing budget. otherwise just send all the members only interested in participating in a BBS, over here to the styleforum. (not that most of them aren't already here.) i'm satisfied with just one forum, and there's room here for all. heck, for maybe a small fee he could set up his own 'ask andy' sticky thread here. or a whole forum, even. /andrew

Gentlemen, thanks for the concern. I presently use XO and it's not cheap. Around $85 per month for 8700 MB. But it's based on the traffic which if higher than normal is more expensive. That's what happened recently, the traffic was higher than the amount contracted for and when that happens XO pulls the plug if I don't add more resources at more money. The purpose of my site is to sell my book, The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes. I do get commission from the banner advs on the site if someone buys something. Why already this year I've gotten two checks for $22.89, and $39.65 ... Maybe I should just take those checks and retire to the French Riviera. The problem with the slow Forum periodically is probably the Snitz softwear and has nothing to do with XO. I'm certainly open to any suggestions for better hosting and a faster Forum. I don't want to charge for access to the Forum like some sites do. It would be self defeating. And Andrew (faustian bargain) if I was great looking I wouldn't have felt insecure enough to get interested in how clothing can be used to help improve your image.. And you wouldn't have all this great info. Do note that the dimple in my tie in the photo is perfect.. I just got a mention on Page 121 of the August Men's Health Magazine so now the traffic will increase.. Thanks again. Andy

I think it's actually a rather pleasant looking photograph.

Andy, Thanks for your response. I'm the one who started this thread, and I hope - in addition to my frustration that you saw expressed - that you also saw my feeling that your site is VERY worthwhile. Thanks for taking the time to explain the situation for all of us, rather than let us speculat ad nauseum. Can't speak for anyone else, but I'll try to think of anything helpful that comes to mind. All the best of continued success to your book and to your site. And hearty congratulations on the Men's Health mention. Respectfully,
