What was discredited? If you mean my post, it was probably quicker than that.

Fair point about increasing/decreasing odds. I phrased that poorly.

Not your post, the bullshit printed in the Lancet.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but can someone shed some light on the oil crisis?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2015/02/03/opec-sees-oil-prices-exploding-to-200-a-barrel/22800331/

I sure as heck don't believe everything an OPEC guy says since they stand to lose a lot if the price per barrel continues to bottom out, but I've heard many reasons why the price per barrel has been low - huge increases in production/supply in the US, decrease in demand in Europe, Saudi Arabia flooding the market with oil to drive the price down so they can bankrupt Iran (sharp political differences b/w the 2 countries), etc.

Now this article is saying price per oil could triple in the near future. I know oil is a game played but what's the real deal here?

There's no oil crisis. Oil is cheaper than it was a year ago. That is a good thing. The savage beheaders and the communist pigs aren't getting as much as they used to, boo hoo.

So I know I'm late to the party I started here, but Paul's comments weren't that vaccines cause autism. What he actually said:
Quote:
"I've heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines," he said on CNBC. "I'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. I think they are a good thing. But I think the parent should have some input. The state doesn't own your children. Parents own the children, and it is an issue of freedom."

That was taken way out of context, but his actual comments mirror what the CDC says:

Quote:
DTaP
Moderate Problems (Uncommon)

Seizure (jerking or staring) (about 1 child out of 14,000)
Non-stop crying, for 3 hours or more (up to about 1 child out of 1,000)
High fever, 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher (about 1 child out of 16,000)

Severe Problems (Very Rare)
Serious allergic reaction (less than 1 out of a million doses) Several other severe problems have been reported after DTaP vaccine. These include:

Long-term seizures, coma, or lowered consciousness
Permanent brain damage.

These are so rare it is hard to tell if they are caused by the vaccine.

MMRV
Moderate Problems

Seizure caused by fever (about 1 child in 1,250 who get MMRV), usually 5-12 days after the first dose. They happen less often when MMR and varicella vaccines are given at the same visit as separate shots (about 1 child in 2,500 who get these two vaccines), and rarely after a 2nd dose of MMRV.
Temporary low platelet count, which can cause a bleeding disorder (about 1 child out of 40,000).

Severe Problems (Very Rare)
Several severe problems have been reported following MMR vaccine, and might also happen after MMRV. These include severe allergic reactions (fewer than 4 per million), and problems such as:

Deafness.
Long-term seizures, coma, lowered consciousness.
Permanent brain damage.

Because these problems occur so rarely, we can’t be sure whether they are caused by the vaccine or not.

I'm happy that crime boss Putin isn't receiving as much oil money.

Canada is probably pretty upset too.

Paul's comments don't "mirror" that CDC text at all.

I'd be interested in knowing what some of the "many cases" he personally knows of are.

Some of the cases were the families Al Gore spoke about in 2000, so basically, Paul was no doubt making shit up.

Thus the confusion. Those kids didn't get autism from vaccines, they got it from global warming.

It's a virus from that damn Internet.

Actually I was more thinking of the families he kept trotting out with problems that his policies would fix...and then it was brought to light they were not real people, rather like I suspect Paul's "many cases" are in his head.

That was what I assume about Paul (and is likely true for the Gore stuff as well). That's actually why I find the Paul comment, while ultimately inconsequential, so irksome. As you originally pointed out to GF, his background suggests he's not ignorant on the topic in the literal sense. So he not only was likely making up supposed anecdotal evidence, but was making up supposedly anecdotal evidence that he knows or should know is at odds with reality.

And to save Ataturk a few minutes of Googling: that's a pretty routine level of politician bullshit that is not exclusive to particular political parties or viewpoints. smile.gif

The life science people would kill for that. They're not even close. The population studies spit out something to the effect of "Nope, doesn't cause autism," while a physical model would be looking at the exact mechanisms of response in the body. It's a totally different kind of question, and probed by different techniques. Population studies don't mean anything in physics, which takes nothing away from the confidence we have in our ability to understand the universe.

This isn't a slam on the life science people either. That shit is hard. Mice are a hell of a lot less measurable than electrons, and humans are worse than both.

In that case, would you tell me when the last frost for my zipcode is going to be in 2019? How 'bout this year?

Frankly, that sounds ridiculous.
