Best airline fr. Europe/London - Tokyo

Considering which airline to book with.
As I live in Italy, using Alitlia from Milan or Rome is logical but I've never flown with it before and for a long haul I'm cautious.
I could use London Heathrow and BA or Virgin (the latter I've not used before).
The euro price for the Alitalia works out about the same as the Sterling price.
Any advice welcome regarding these services or JAL or others etc.
Thanks.

PS. I'm talking economy, of course.

I would not use Alitalia, their service is so-so but many of their airplanes could use a good re-fit. BA or Virgin would be great but I don't think you should have to go that far north to connect.

The service on Asian airlines (JAL would be your best bet since they fly from Fiumicino) is unparalleled. But if all else fails, your best bet would be through Heathrow.

If you need any more help just PM me.

A major downside of BA/Virgin is having to connect through LHR.

If you can't get a direct flight from Rome or Milan, I would suggest connecting through Munich or maybe Amsterdam. As Jetblast suggests, the Asian carriers are excellent. Failing that, LH or KLM.
