exactly what I was going to suggest.

I am sorry but I would not be caught dead with a shotgun. What am I a farmer?

Your chances of being caught dead with a 300 dollar pistol (or any amount) in your own home are alot greater than if you had a farmer's shotgun in the same situation.

again agreed.

(I would like to also state i don't think you need a gun at all, but if you are going to get one, get a shotgun. for $300 bucks you can get something that will cover all of your needs)

Get a Winchester 1300 Defender. Probably the most reliable (and affordable...~$250-300) shotgun for home protection that's manufactured today.

home self defense I'd go with a revolver

S&W 686 is a nice 357 wheelgun, as is the Colt python

For lesser $, Taurus or Rossi makes good alternatives

but my fave handgun is the Walther P-38 9mm

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason that the revolver may be better than the semi-auto for self-defense.

Have you shot or used a firearm before?

I recommend going to a gun shop and try holding and shooting some.

For home defense you do not need a compact one. You need one that's comfortable to hold and easy to use, both important in stressful situations.

I have 5 9mm's, and use hallow point bullets for home defense (corbon)

Glock-17
Sig-226
Beretta 92-F
H&K USP compact
Walther P99

The USP is too small, too much recoil. The Sig is accurate but a bit bulky and feels unnatural in the hans. My favorite and the one in the drawer of the nightstand is the Glock.

Maybe Mr. Libourel will chime in soon. He would be considered an expert at such thing. I purchased the Sig-226 after reading his review, from 1985!

They don't jam, there is no safety to fumble around with when things get serious. Point and shoot.

Joking aside as I posted in my first post I am looking for conceal carry. hense compact .40.

P.S. Is it me? Or are you guys thinking out loud about bespoke holster?

P.P.S. I love old Mauser with a wooden stock, but for collection only. As well as Nagan from 1920s. Communist nostalgia weapons.

exactly, and keeping a clip loaded can weaken the spring tension (esp if you never go shooting regularly and cycle thru the clip) possibly causing the bullet to jam as it's injected into the chamber.

plus I'm cheap, so I like buying bagfuls of reloads which oftentimes can jam a semi-auto but I've never had a problem thru a revolver

I still have my spanish Star "firestar" which is a compact .40 (similar size but a bit wider than a 380)

Back when I was insane I used to carry it all the time as it's easily hideable and is a 7+1

P.

but why?

the first thing that you want to do is figure out what you need it for. plan your arms around what you really need, not how it will look.

I'm not sure if I understand this - you want a gun for concealed carry because you fear someone will break into your home?
