I'm a frail little girly man - Page 2

I would start by taking at least 2 weeks off. Then I'd follow that up with 2-4 weeks of keeping everything in the 14-16 rep range. That will result in more lactic acid buildup which plays an important role in cartilage health. It's quite common for one's muscles to outgrow their joints as joints grown and repair themselves at a much slower rate. You may also want to start taking Glucosamine.

I've considered this, but read a lot of conflicting reports on it's effectiveness. Then there's some that suggest to buy it containing chondroitin, and some that suggest it's not necessary. Approximately how long does one need to take it for one to see an improvement in their joints? Globe, 26 - but I'd say my joint pain goes back several years.

I try to work out, I try to be active but these small body injuries and pains that occur really limit my ability. Are my bones and joints just flawed?? Did I do something wrong to get to where I am now? Anything I can do to improve it, or should I just drift through life accepting the fact that I'm frail and I'll never be strong like bull?

how old are you?

eat a bit more. try eating more protein rich foods like chicken breast, eggs, fish, dairy, so forth.
eat more vegetables that are high in color. like beet, brocolli, cherries, grapes, carrots, etc.

these things will build your body, trust me, it will take some time.

eating only junk food (not that you do, i dont know) will only deteriorate your body tissues and poison your blood little by little.

leukemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease are in the works if that continues with anybody. trust me.

you dont have to do heavy exercise now. just do a little. start off small steps. just eat right that is key .

Ahh, sounds like me when I work out. Took some time to get to the point where I could even work out regularly, but I still experience crazy joint crackage and the chronic pain below my waist still kills me. Can't do push ups, because of a missing/malformed bone in my wrist, fun times.

You can still get strong like ox, but you're gonna have to take it slower and do joint-strengthening exercises as well as regular ones. If something really hurts, especially if its a sharp pain, stop working that area and drag yourself to the doctor and have them make sure nothing is messed up there. If it turns out something is in fact messed up, switch to an alternate exercise for that area.

Do you have odd joint pains even when you haven't been working out for quite a while? If so, you might want to get some blood tests to ensure you don't have a chronic inflammatory condition. Some people develop mild forms of lupus, for example, that never progress much beyond arthralgia (joint pain). If something like that were the case, treatment options would likely be available.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just picked up a bottle of Glucosamine, and I'll schedule a checkup to see if the doc can find out what's up with me.

I am in a slightly similar situation. I'm very fragile and prone to injury, particularly with joints. What excercises help build your joint strength?

Isometric exercises help. Connective tissue disorders sometimes cause the complaints being described. Free weights are not recommended for people with fragile joints. Also, there are knee braces and other devices that one can wear for protection when exercising.

I think intensive stretching is actually better for strengthening your connective tissues around the joints. It's not fun, and it's not nearly as satisfying as lifting weights and building muscles, but consider that as athletes get older, they move from doing tons of off-season weight training to a heavy dose of stretching and flexibility work.

Ever seen those 80-yr-old yogis in India? Those guys have bodies of pure, lean iron. Skinny, but very strong.

If the fragility is associated with an extended range of motion, lots of stretching probably is unwise.

You don't push. But the point of stretching is to extend the range of motion. One suffers pain, strains and injuries when the muscles are forced into extremes to which they aren't accustomed. No amount of muscle-building is going to help that, nor are tons of supplements. Stretching builds joint strength, lifting builds muscle strength. One doesn't have an achy shoulder or elbow because the muscle is weak, but because the muscle is tight. How many young pitchers in MLB have got hamstring pulls in the last few months? I'd be willing to bet it's because as they don't stretch enough. It's certainly not because they don't have enough muscle.
