I think Luger's is an interesting experience but I think it's sort of a kitchy place. At the end of the day, I know of steakhouses even in Montreal and Toronto which I prefer. The porterhouse is great, but I don't think it's worth it when you can eat in much more beautiful surroundings and with much greater convenience... also, you can avoid having to be next to some loud New Jersey contractor and his gelled up entourage talking loudly about whatever pointless thing they did that day. It just attracts the wrong kind of people in my opinion.

I will definately get the burger next time I'm there. I've heard it's great, and I also know for a fact that I'd only ever go for lunch, and never again at night.

What exactly is the distinction of a Brazilian steakhouse? I've seen these in Shanghai and wondered what the idea was.

They bring out skewers of different cuts....

and the servers slice off the meat at your table. You can get as much as you went and they have several different cuts. Fogo is the best one Ive been to and it was started in Brazil so its authentic. THere are a few ****** ones though....

the service is amazing

unlimited skweres of really good cuts. Youll go into protein comatose. Unlimited mashed potatoes, cheesey bread, polenta and other stuff

really good salad bar also

I have a friend from Rio. Steak is an art in Brazil, and the varieties they bring to you at your table are amazing. It's kind of like a dim sum restaurant or wedding reception--servers wander around in the restaurant with all kinds of different cuts and roasts of meat, and you just pick and choose what you want. The one time I went, there were too many varieties for my table of 4 to be able to try them all.

The steak at Luger's is awesome. The ambience is kitschy, brusque and touristy. But once you start on the meat, you kind of forget your surroundings in a haze of juicy delirium.

Some great responses... Still, however, I think that Peter Luger has the best steak around. I enjoy going to all of the cool steak joints around the city with the great looking chicks at the bar, etc. I like the atmosphere of these "hip" joints as well as the next guy. But, when it gets down to the steak.... damn, this stuff is good.

I do not think I would call Luger's a "toursity" joint, because you have to have reservations months in advance. Sure, they have lots and lots of visitors and they rightfully should since they have been voted as the best steahouse in the country for many years.

Bottom line from a real steak lover... Peter Lugers.

I went to Lugers a few years ago and it was amazing. We booked a reservation for a Saturday 3 months in advance and 4:30 pm was our only option - it's that popular. The porterhouse is amazing, sides are amazing. No frills at all - you don't go for fancy service or a great looking dining room. It's steak. Really good steak.

I live in DC, so I havent been up to NYC in a while. Around here, I like Capital Grille a lot. Great food all over the menu. Last time I was there, I got a Kona Coffee Bean encrusted NY Strip. Ridiculous steak, probably the best I have had since Lugers.

Oh yeah.... Peter Luger bacon ( about the size of a small tire ) smothered with those fresh tomatoes, onions, and floating in the incredible Peter Luger Sauce is a treat - especially with their house french and garlic breads. Damn good.

Glad I am a card carrying member for over 25 years.

This is the real deal........

My friend and I always take a group there for our birthdays. This year I actually got a reservation for 6 on a Friday at 7pm. Guess the recession is hitting people in their steakhole.

The strip side is fantastic... don't care much for the filet side.

Also, here's a pic of the aforementioned bacon strip from my last visit there:

Does Luger's have a good (or great) bone-in rib eye? Don't eat porterhouse much. Wondering if Luger's is worth the trip if I don't get porterhouse or not inclined for a burger.

A Bone-in Rib eye is the best cut by far. They do a great job, but it doesn't have the romantic feel that a nice big luger porterhouse has.
