I would not combine a brown suit with a grey tie...

Shirt - ercu, pink, light blue or a very light lilac (you could maybe go for white)

Tie - grey would work, although not a dark grey from the pics

Too tricky a grey tie with a brown suit. Its going to look weak in any iteration but you may come out with something that looks "ok".

You should never wear a dark shirt with a suit. To be safe, wear a light blue shirt. But as the others have said, a brown suit is not good for a grey tie. Since you bought a brown suit I take it you already have a grey or navy suit? A grey suit would be best.

Light blue or white. And the gray tie is a poor choice, but if you're stuck with it, you're stuck with it. If the tie and suit are solids, I would recommended a pattered shirt. Blue pattern on white base.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really wasn't sure about the grey either, and you all just confirmed my feelings. I'm wearing it for a dance, so I needed the grey to match my date's dress. However, I may be able to match the other parts of her outfit and it look better. What would you all suggest as the best shirt/tie combo with this suit?

So you're in high school? Men don't match their date. I'd have to recommend a solid white shirt since it's for a dance at night. A light blue tie would go best, especially since there is light blue in the suit. I'd recommend a solid shirt and tie since the suit is patterned. It's best to keep things simple in the evening. Because there is blue in the suit, anything other than blue or white (but definitely not a white tie) will either clash to be too much colour in the outfit for the evening. If you want to match your date, you'll need a different suit.

Too sweeping a generalization: I think a French blue or an even darker blue shirt can look great with a pale gray or tan suit, just to cite a couple of possibilities. Dark shirt with dark suit--NO!

I don't disagree, but darker than French blue and what tie do you wear with it?

OK, the dress my date is wearing is now coral. How would a light blue shirt and a tie with blue and coral look?

A shirt similar to this blue:

Another (general) question: what is the preference here between cotton, oxford, and broadcloth for dress shirts?

Potential tie:

The colour of shirt and tie are fine, but don't wear a button down collar.

Oh, pink, yellow, burnt orange, some shades of red or maroon, just for starters.

I wouldn't wear that tie. I'd wear a solid, or regimental striped blue tie, and a white shirt. Not a button down for a dance, I agree. A blue shirt is fine, too - the blue you picked is perfectly fine. I think a white would look a little sharper.
