I think I saw a Ferrari 250 GTO today...

What else could it have been? It was definitely a Ferrari, it had the badges on the flanks, above some vents. It had that flat, vertically cut ducktail, with the little bitty upturn at the top, and two tailights per side. The nose was E-typey, and from the side it was really curvy, from far away I thought it was a Cheetah. It also had badges that said "Daytona" but it was not a 365 GTB, nor was it one of the other 250s, nor was it a 275, as that only has one tailight per side, and it doesn't have the curves or the haunches of the one I saw.

Any ideas? I know who drives it, and I'd be really surprised if he was pulling in the dough necessary for a 10M USD Ferrari. It is possible, but... Besides, would anyone drive a 250GTO on the street?

Huntsman

Yes there is a German company that sells a replica body you can build over an Opel and have a Ferrari looking car

I took some nice pics last weekend as the 1000miglia came through town. There was a 250 GT and numerous others. I'll upload some if I get the chance. Meanwhile here's a link to this year's entries.

click on English version (top left) then on 'Photo gallery' then 'Photographs' then 'Cars'.

There are lots of rebodied 250 GTEs running around. Where did you see it and what where was the liscence plate from?

For some reason a replica didn't really occur to me -- I collect in a few fields where there are replicas, and I never really got into that mindest, I suppose. Probably just what it was. After reading the posts I was Googling, and my, as you said, zjp, rebodies of other 250s are not uncommon; I don't know if that's better or worse. At least that way they can have V-12s -- a Ferrari-like body with a Chevy engine or somesuch would be hard to accept. What was up with the Daytona badging, then? Regards, Huntsman

did it sound like it could be a Ferrari, or a replica? Sometimes you hear a Ferrari drive by sounding like a scooter and you know something's up

I saw one on the streets of New York City about 10-12 years back. The car was sitting on the side of the street in midtown, with the engine running, and no driver. I stood and admired it for a while, and finally located the driver, who was making a call from a pay phone not too far away. He was dressed up in Ferrari colors (Logo jacket, etc.)

He finished his phone call and asked me for directions to the Jacob Javitz center. He was an employee of a car dealership in Connecticut, and was driving the car into Manhattan for a convention of some sort at the Javitz Center. He was hopelessly lost.

I was amazed that the car wasn't being brought to Manhattan in an enclosed trailer.

The car was beautiful, the engine made a wonderful sound, and I have to confess that when I saw it sitting by the side of the street with the engine running that I was (briefly) tempted to hop in and take it for a spin.

One of my all time favorite cars.

I think these would make a good daily driver.

Some have served that very function. Nick Mason apparently used his GTO to pick his kids up from school quite often, even in the snow. Recently sold Le Mans winner 330 TRI/LM was used as a daily driver for nine years in New York City by businessman Hisashi Okada. He did the same with a 250 LM.
