Suggestions on places to visit in USA?

I will be heading down to USA this coming December for a period of 5 months for a university exchange programme.

The internet is full of tourist-y places to visit and do in the USA, however, I would also like to visit places in search of clothes/shoes/accessories etc. .

I am more inclined towards the sartorial side of dressing but I do wear jeans and shirt out regularly as Singapore's weather is not very "suit friendly".

If you have any recommendation such as thrift stores or retail stores for me to visit in the east side such as new york/boston etc , do feel free to reply and may others benefit from this thread too.

As I am a student with a shoestring budget, do you people have any recommended stores that I can visit that will falls within my budget.

However, that being said, I don't mind visiting stores just to "look around" and appreciate the styles and immerse in the ambience offered.

Also, i will be doing a bit of travelling around the States after the exchange program and I would like to know if there are any "must-go" places to visit in the west side eg Chicago, LA, LV, San diego etc?

Thank you all in advance

In the west the San Francisco Bay Area is hard to beat for concentrated points of interest . It would take months just to hit the high points from wine country to Big Sur plus the Sierra Nevada is only 3 hrs away

If shopping is primary New York is unsurpassed I would say. On the west coast LA would be first with San Francisco a somewhat distant second

On the east coast, NYC and DC.

Chicago, Orlando? Wtf.

Honolulu/Hawaii might as well be another country given the distance.

NYC and DC are both great, and very different cities. Then LA and maybe even Vegas.

Vegas is such an artificial experience though--it is both the most and least American of cities at the same time.

LA over SF?

Thank you all for the valuable tips.

In each city that you all have mentioned,
1. are there any must go to places of interest?
2. i am also interested in knowing if there are any lesser known places of interest?
3. are there any retail store to satisfy my the sartorialist in me? (i.e menswear, leather craft store etc.)

Thank you all for your generous inputs!

There are many things you can call Baltimore, but "lovely" does not come close to qualifying.
