My fiance surprised me w/ a pair of the Japan Olive Selvedge Chinos. Look, feel and fit great.
Fit: went w/ a 33 straight and these fit just right. I have a 32 straight in the Italy Indigo Cashmere denim and these fit my athletic frame (5'10", 175 lbs) a bit snugly, particularly in the thighs. I'm much happier w/ the fit of the 33 straight chinos. I don't care much for the uber-slim fit that seems en vogue these days. A pair of pants that I can move in and not feel like I'm wearing compression garments is much more to my liking.
To echo what you and mountainmike said... I've never been into the super slim look. Men shouldn't have pants that look like they were painted on. It looks noticeably odd in the wild. I think people can pull off the slim look no problem depending on body type. I'm 200 lbs with big legs so I wouldn't consider anything other than straight, but I've seen thinner men who most likely were in drama class in high school with the slim pants and they look very appropriate. Accepting your body type and image you wish to convey and going with it without regret goes a long way. Gustin straight fit does well for regular guys with athletic builds. I find I don't need a tapered option if I barely size down and stretch them out to proper waist fit.
