***No Man Walks Alone x Vass MTO Thread*** - Page 6

I am torn. I can see how the case could be made for P2 being frumpy, but because the chukka's vamp is unadorned, the vast expanse of material seems to exaggerate the elongation, to my eye. I have F last in other styles and it is just a trimmer take on the round concept. I do think there is something about the length and height of a chukka that creates an optical illusion that is worth taking into consideration.

The differences look more negligible in your picture, but the profile pic upthread looked more aggressive. I guess it all comes down to trick photography. By the way, that EG 202 is sure handsome.

I would not be unhappy with F last... I need more pictures to know.

To my eyes, the U last seems to look quite a bit softer when paired with suede or even a grain leather (albeit to a lesser extent)

I'm with sprout2 on the F vs P2 last. I could see myself being fine with either, but it would be useful to have more photos, if anyone can provide them.

FWIW, I have a pair of chukkas built on EG's 202 (no Vass chukkas to show, unfortunately). The P2 and 202 seem similar, so maybe these will be useful

Do those get a lot of wear? The shape is definitely very classically-oriented.

And what is the jacket?

Not sure if this question was directed at me, but if it was ...

None of my shoes get "a lot" of wear, to be honest. But ... these are probably in the middle of the road in terms of use. Not my most worn shoes; not ones that sit untouched (although, those photos were taken when I just received them).

The jacket is a single-breasted sport coat by Napolisumisura, made from a 85/15 wool/ cashmere blend hopsack from Caccioppoli (510156).

Thanks rc that's a handy reference. I like the U best, followed by the F. The P2 looks a bit too blobby to me for a Chukka.

Black calf leather
8 eyelets
No quick lacing hooks
Single sole (to be topy-ed)
Storm welted
Austerity brogue
F last

Really like everything about this particular makeup.

Thanks for the links, RC.

One thing to keep in mind: from my experience, people tend to take photos of shoes at angles that make them look a bit sleeker than they are. I think it's because "sleekness" looks better when shoes are are on the shelf or sitting by themselves, but can be a bit controversial when actually worn.

This looks good to me, for example, and it's just a top down shot of the F last

This looks unusually shapely for the P2, and is of some side angles

This looks too pointy for my taste, and is again of some side angles (again, F last)

Camera angles can really play tricks.

DW:

By "a lot of use" I meant if it was something you gravitate towards. The pictures did look a little blobby to me.

Thanks for the jacketing details.

I concur with you about the angles and agree on all points with the ones you linked. The F last seen from above (the most natural angle, I think) looks surprisingly nice. My apprehensions were washed away. I was mostly going off of the suede picture where it looks so tapered. That top-down 3/4 profile angle is probably the most misleading way to shoot a shoe.

With the high waist and chiseled edge the U-last chukka reminds me of Sutor Mantellassi type stuff, IYKWIM.

That austerity boot is gorgeous.

Yea, that's probably the most misleading angle for any kind of clothing - the fit of a jacket, the shape of a shoe, etc.

I welcome more photos, but think I'd be happy with the F last, personally. Wouldn't be against a P2 chukka though.

Just for fun, here are some NMWA pictures of Vass' medium brown suede. I think it would make for a great chukka.

Agree that Austerity Brogue looks great.  I would consider that option although not black or storm welt. It has beaufiful lines that are thrown off a bit by the storm welt.

@dieworkwear, curious what colors you think would best pair with that suede? I just got that shoe from NMWA, but have not had the chance to try them on yet with different trouser combos.  It is my first experience with U-Last and I don't think it would work well with boots.  I prefer the F-last.

Well I suppose one could critique the photo angle - and the photographer's lack of skill is certainly open for debate :embar: - but on my feet, and as seen by both my eyes and my camera, the Vass F-last is pretty much a dead ringer for the EG 82 last in terms of the shape of the toe box.  Rounded, but sleek.  I like me some sleek.

Agreed on both points.
