I think Kulata and AAS both look great, but their ties look like predominantly navy and burgundy backgrounds respectively, which seemed too safe to me. Mind you, I have to admit that to my senses, blue/white striped shirts and solid/predominantly brown ties seem like staple items, so it was just based on the fact that Claghorn specified that they were allowed. I also think that with a different tie and shoes, Betelgeuse would have been my top vote. I also really like NOBD's outfit, but it felt too contextually removed from all of the others to make the comparison.
My tie is actually purple with lilac dots but hey it's all fun.

I guess Clags felt like he couldn't win unless I was excluded. Typical. smile.gif

There were certainly some I liked, but the quantity of entries did not improve the quality, and several of the best posters here didn't enter this time. Mind you, I recognize that taking good pictures has a lot to do with it - some fits may have looked better IRL.

I hear you, but you made it sound like this week's challenge was an uncharacteristic disaster. I happen to think it was par, or slightly better. I don't care who the poster is, I just look at the fits, and some of them would have been worthy of the best we have.

@Kulata
Well then I should have given you a vote too.

id agree. i thought the vast majority of fits were quite nice, and some were stellar.

I think the challenge was successful on several levels. One, it was certainly a challenge, as evinced by the wide array of quality and the variety of approaches. Two, it was a challenge that attracted a large number of entrants; I've always felt that these challenges should be for the benefit of the participants first and the audience second. I think this was a learning experience for many. I know it was for me; as I mentioned in the other thread, as I went through a collection of 250 fits I had saved, I found less than ten that really qualified. I don't yet know what I'll do with that information. Perhaps I will dedicate some time to finding non-staple items that function almost as well as staples (e.g. a gray striped white shirt, a dark burgundy paisley square).

Finally, as Flyingmonkey said, there were a number of fits which seriously lacked coherence. However, there is also a pronounced gap in voting between those lacking coherence and those attempting to maintain it despite handicaps. A few weeks ago, Cantabrigian posted a clearly not purple tie for the purple tie challenge. I included it because I was curious how many votes it would receive--it got 17. Not a shining day for forum democracy. In this challenge, we see the people are capable of making choices which align with what most of us would consider tasteful or at least tastefully interesting.

I am happy with the entrants, both the quantity and the diversity of quality, and the voting. For some, a lesson learned; for others, knowledge reinforced. My train has arrived at its stop. Great job, all.

Number of participants notwithstanding, this challenge was wack. The dividing line between "staple" and "unstaple" was vague and arbitrary. No hate, though, Clags. smile.gif
