A Small, Cheap Convertible for a Noob

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a small, inexpensive convertible to replace my 2003 Ford Explorer. I'm not sure what the resale on the Explorer is, but I'm just looking for a convertible (a '90s SL5/600 is what I really want but I prob can't afford that) that a high school junior/senior can afford. It needs to have an automatic transmission (since I'm a newer driver I can't drive stick shift yet) and I just want it to be economical.

Suggestions?

TIA

I had a bad feeling that the Miata would be the first post. Alas...

That is exactly the price range I am looking for, thank you. I'll have some extra cash to fix it up a bit.

I was thinking Miata, too. They are drivers' cars. I wouldn't suggest Jags or Triumphs and such. What about the little BMW? It's cute and less, well, you know than the Miata. The Benzes are pretty neat, too. I see one of these every now and again, with a young guy driving. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-...QQcmdZViewItem Some of the VWs wouldn't be out of the question, and may have turbos in them even, but that's not my metier. A beamer would be cool if you can swing it. Best, Huntsman

Thanks Huntsman, I didn't realize that kind of Benz could be that easy on the wallet Either a BMW or a Mercedes is what I am looking for.

Not necessarily cheap but a stylish, high quality roadster with an automatic, except for a few European grey-market ones.

What type MB is that LabelKing? I've seen a few of them around but the model escapes me. Edit- nvm, 560SL. JB

It's an R107 Series, notably a 380SL. They also had the 280SL, 300SL, 380SL, 450SL, and the 560SL. Most of them are somewhat large V8 engines.

Not in the class of those mentioned, but you could get a Chrysler Sebring '00-'02 for about that much too, if not cheaper.

I always loved Triumph convertibles.

May I ask what is wrong with your 2003 Explorer?

Mazda Miata is a fine automobile. Glenn Close and John Malkovich drove one. It's never about the car-- it's the man behind the wheel.
