No, it's possibly the most depressing city in the country. I mean, you can see the shanty town around the landfill from the boardwalk... it's only 2-3 blocks away.

It's been over 10 years since I've been. We were stayed in AC when we went to Six Flags (back in the day when you had to travel that far to get to a Six Flags).

Six Flags Great Adventure! Not really that close to AC.

It didn't seem that way when I visited last year. Sure, it was fairly gritty, but not *that* gritty.

Is there really not enough for people to do on the boardwalk that they have to venture into the gritty part of town?

Thanks to all who contributed anything useful to the thread.

This is just going to be a weekend getaway for me and my GF since we dont get much time alone. I had been to AC about 1.5 years ago and did not find it trashy and disgusting, but I am sure there are places which could make a bad impression on me.

Atlantic City is fine if you stick to the boardwalk. Don't listen to these weak-bellied prima donnas. Obviously it's no Vegas, but it doesn't try to be and it's good for what it is.

AC isn't a bad choice for a weekend getaway. After all, you probably won't see much outside your hotel room if you're with your girlfriend.

Yeah, it's like 75 or so miles away. Back when SFGA first opened there were only little crappy-looking motels around and my dad didn't want to stay at one. I think we stayed at the Merv Griffin Resort. It was decent.

PS. Now that I think about it, it was more like 15-16 years ago.

Over the holidays i was at the Borgata and have to say i had a great time. there are a number of good restaurants and bars and what i liked most is there is no smoking in much of the casino area. for those of us from NYC - they are starting the direct train there next month.

Agreed. Bobby Flay at the Borgata was good the last time I went there.
