Tie basics 101 - Page 16

Grenadines seem to be preferred by the majority here.

I currently own a navy herringbone, burgundy herringbone and black knit. Are herringbone and grenadine interchangeable tie textures or is one more versatile/favourable than the other?

I plan to own these 3 ties for the rest of my life.

It most of the basic ties go well with light blue.  At times I wish I had studied basic color theory so I had a better sense of the color palette combinations.  But I must confess this stuff is indeed fun.

Black, shades of blue and shades of grey are best with a white shirt. Burgundy looks best with a pink shirt, blue if you must, IMO. Other ties are going to look better on non-white backgrounds. I don't like light blue or grey with a light blue shirt, but pretty much every other tie color I can think of works with light blue.

I can do that. smile.gif

I will post it in the Hober thread later today.

Just found the Hober appreciation thread. Thanks for pointing it out.

Wonderful stuff. Maybe save me from ordering too many swatch sets.

Pinkpanther - which sets do you own?

I was rhinking Grossa and Prometeo....at first

Quick comment on Hober burgundy:

The grenadine burgundy is a very rich, dark red.  Personally I greatly prefer this.  The 'dark red' does what it says on the tin.

The burgundy pin dots that I've seen tend to be closer to dark red.

But there is no substitute for the swatch sets.

As for how many swatch sets p/panther owns, I think the question is more how many Hobers does p/panther not own!:)

Much like the tie box, I feel like there should be a swatch box for those poor souls (poor like those addicted to the best heroin money can buy) in the Hober appreciation thread that they can pass around to each other.

I have all the grenadine weaves, the oxford and diamond weaves, solid reppe, solid satin and madder print swatch sets.

+1 on the swatch sets.  Not that expensive (especially if you combine them with another order to save on shipping) and very valuable for finding the exact color you are seeking. As you can see above there are still a number of sets I don't have. :D

Gents,

I am about to order the burgundy prometeo and figure I may as well get a rep tie, too.  Here are several I think look pretty good.  I cannot seem to avoid getting navy blue as the main color.  I think the first one is probably the best and pretty versatile, too.  I think I can wear it with grey or charcoal suits, but not vary blue?

I am interested in hearing folks views on the first couple of rep ties one would get, given that I would want to wear it with a variety of my solid suits and jackets - charcoal, grey, navy blue.  The versatility versus optimality tradeoff again.

Dark red and white on grenadine fina.  Archibald rocks this one, I think.

Dark Red & White On Grenadine Fina Stripe Silk Tie #4

Red on midnight blue.  Fun but probably too bold.

Red On Midnight Blue Thai Stripe Silk Tie #9

Powder blue stripe on midnight blue.  Alas out of stock.  Seems pretty darn nice.

Powder Blue Stripe On Midnight Blue Grenadine Tie #4

English Stripe Tie #40.   Nice but perhaps more spring?

I want to add this one for consideration.  Its a PPanther picture.  Pretty damn nice, too.

after reviewing these pictures I think it should be either Archibald's or PPanther's tie as my first Hober rep.  Thoughts?

Or in true SF fashion, BOTH!

Yes, the answer is both (of course, I have to say that because I have both...). :)

On a more serious note, you don't need both in a basic tie collection.  Pick the one you like the best, can't go wrong with either.

+1. You have a lot of other options to look at in a basic tie collection. I prefer the first one pictured and PinkPanther's off-white stripe on midnight grenadine.

Thanks Gents.

Would either of the two best, lets call PPanthers and Archibalds, work with navy blue suit?  My sense is no.
