Help me choose a new car (possibly gay)

Thread Starter
I thought about posting this in the "Cars Widely Considered Gay" thread but I decided it would be wiser to start a new thread.

I am in the market for a car - I will probably buy something lightly used (i.e. less than 20,000 miles) and would like to pay around $35,000 (perhaps slightly more).

I will freely admit to being a big fan of gay or "girly" cars - I currently drive a VW Beetle, and before that I drove a Miata, and before that a Toyota Celica (the really curvy early '90s model).

I am looking primarily at two-seat roadsters and am thus far considering the following:

Audi TT
Porsche Boxster
Mercedes SLK280
Jaguar XK8/XKR

I'm not a big car guy so any comments, experiences, suggestions would be much appreciated.

xk8, even with its electrical problems, is the best of that bunch in terms of styling and engine.

Get this car (Lotus Elise) Most fun that $35k can buy you. Not really a "girly" car, and a little short on amenities, but truly amazing to drive.

Boxter would be my pick out of the group you named.

If you like English cars, why not look at an MGA: More beautiful than any modern Jaguar.

Or a TR6

You might also consider a Corvette:

I also like the Jag out of that group. I would suggest adding a Z4 to your list, they are nice cars if you like teh styling. Drive them all and you will know which one to buy.

Assuming you're referring to the previous model of the Jag and the Audi (and probably even if you're not), the Boxster, and especially the S which I would recommend springing for, is in a class of it's own in terms of overall performance. It's also a very different car than the big, soft GT that is the Jag, so if you want something more comfortable that's probably your car. The Audi and Merc do exceed the Porsche in interior quality.

S2000 or Boxster S.

I assume the MGA is a manual transmission right?

I will be in the same position in a few months. My list is as follows: Lotus Exige S (55-60k) if I do something reckless for a change. '01-'05is Jaguar XKR if I am sensible. So, yeah, the Jag.

What do you drive now?

The MGA is a '50s roadster so it will be a stick shift. I don't know if it's a synchromesh transmission, however.

A V-12 powered Jaguar XJ-S. Nice to see you back around.

Heh, yeah, rock out the double declutching on the old Moss crunchboxes...

My only boxster experience is driving a non-S loaner for a few days while my 911 was in service. I did like it quite a bit, very nimble, and more lively than the 911 (though built quality leaves something to be desired). And of the list of cars u suggested, it has the least gay-hair-dresser appeal, thanks in large part to it being a Porsche, a brand heavily associated with the very masculine sport of racing.

If you do decide to get a Boxster, make sure several major repair issues have been addressed. The watercooled flat-6 is not exactly known as a bullet proof motor (except for the turbo and GT versions, where it is still based on the old air-cooled motor). You can check the Rennlist.com forums for lots more information.

Also remember to factor-in the ownership costs in your decision.

I think they were, for gears 2-4 at least. First was non-sync for sure.
