Ok, so then the rest of the boot is lined -- that makes complete sense.  I was confused by some of the messages, which I took to mean in some instances that the boot was completely unlined.  That seemed odd to me, regardless of how thick the leather might be.

In that case, I'm pretty well indifferent but think it probably makes sense to leave well enough alone and have the shaft unlined.  Thank you for clarifying for me.

With no lining I meant just the shaft unlined tbh. Just like the regular Snowdon. This would be my preference over a lined shaft.

Guys what about soles on this Snodown? Are we going with commando or is anybody interested in Ridgeway soles?

The spec isn't finalised yet, but if possible will be
  • Zug leather (waiting to hear from factory on availability)
  • Full bellows tongue
  • speed hooks
  • Commando > ridgeway > dainite sole
  • possible faux cap-toe
  • possible full lining (if it can be done)

Shearling (a la Turner Twins) was mentioned, but it seems the majority don't want this, and again may not be possible.

I really think commando is a must here. At least that's my opinion. This thing is heavy duty.

I gotta say I agree with you on the commando. I am open to others, but commando would be my top choice.

so what's the deal with "zug" leather? some cursory searching says that it's scotch grain - is that basically it? harder wearing, more rustic looking, weatherproof properties?

Look here.

I heard from Crockett & Jones today and the zug is in the post! It should be with me tomorrow, so expect some pics. I already have a sample of Horween zug in oxblood I requested from A.A.Crack, so it will be interesting to see how it compares, or if its actually the same leather.

Also, as dddrees queried, I checked if there is a limit on how many pairs we can order. There is, it's 12. Any more is too disruptive to production. However, we may have enough to put in a second order, but this would need another 12 (and needs confirming with the factory). Initially I just thought we'd fill up the first 12 in the order people asked to be 'in' and then try for a second 12. But I guess another option would be to have two orders for two different specs, if that works out?!?

Conveniently 24 people have shown interest:

Please let me know if you're missing, want removing etc

The favoured spec at the moment seems to be:

  • veldtschoen construction
  • zug leather
  • full bellows
  • speed hooks
  • commando sole
  • faux cap-toe
  • unlined shaft (as standard Snowdon)

I have one more thing to throw into the mix. Is anyone interested in trying to get the heel pull changed? So, instead of being straight it could be shaped in a similar way to the Galway, it then fits in nicely with the side stitching. Crocketts used to do this kind of heel pull on the Wicklow, so it may be possible.

Standard Snowdon (Click to show)

Galway (Click to show)

Wicklow (Click to show)

Interested to hear your thoughts!

Once I've posted the leather we can start getting some definite names and get the order rolling....

And I have already posted a pic of Horween Willow Zug leather, here it is just for reference again.

Thank @nigeljh for heading this

I am fine with pull tab either way.

Just want to run a reality check here - anyone has a picture of snowdon with faux captoe?
