The Tank Americaine is a beautiful watch.  There have been a few variations, I prefer the one without a date window.  It looks a little dressier without the date, but each version is very nice.

Thanks, its the Louis Cartier Tank XL.  But many people abreviate the name as LC Tank XL.

Yes, the Tank XL that I have was part of their Collection Privee and was very limited in production only 200 pieces in rose gold and 50 in platinum.  The new Tank XL is slightly larger and thinner (as it does not have the exhibition back to view the movement), and its a plain silver dial without guilloche.  Its a very nice watch, but I like many elements of my Tank XL more.

I've always fancied the Reverso since it is a true icon in the world of watches.  The MC series is a fantastic line of watches.  My only reason for leaning more toward the Reverso is my Dad has a MC 8 Day Reserve that I might inherit some day. 

I can tell you I was traveling a few months ago and I got to try on the 1931 with black dial...its stunning.  I think an open back would be killer on that watch, but I understand in keeping with originality of purpose and design that they used a solid back.

I wouldn't wind it without having it serviced.  By now any oils/lubricants have long dried up, and the gaskets that keep moisture out are probably cracked and would not keep moisture and dust out.  But its easy enough to service and enjoy.  Its not as problematic or costly as car that hasn't been run in many years whereby most seals, gaskets, rubber hoses, and belts crack, deform or are waiting to burst under pressure.  While its probably worth a lot more than he paid for it when new (remember, when these watches were were maybe $150-200 back in the 70s, which was a lot back then), unless its a rare special edition (and or was worn by a real astronaut) its not worth crazy money that would cause me not to wear it...but to each his own.  If he is worried about its value he should get an appraisal and make sure its fully insured.  Most home owners policies only cover items up to a value of something like $1,000 or $2,000.

Not sure how old your Grandfather's Cartier is, but the vintage ones are really beautiful!
