You sort of have to decide what you want to do, as its your watch. I have some friends like Frills, who say if it's not broke, don't fix it. I have other friends who religiously service their watches every 5 years or so. I think it depends on the watch. If its something that's water resistant to 100m, then I think you are probably fine with going 7-10 years. If its a dress watch or something water resistant to say only 30 meters, but its worn every day maybe 5 years, if worn occasionally maybe 7 tops. There are varying thoughts on the matter, lubricants can congeal over time, or possibly evaporate if a watch has pushers but minimal water resistance (say a chronograph that is only WR to 30m). Some say watches worn infrequently the oils/lubricant's congeal, others say wearing something everyday the oils get dirty or wear away just from constantly protecting metal surfaces that have contact with other metal surfaces (such as gears). While oil reduces friction, there still is friction and possibly some minute metal from friction gets into the oils. I think wearers tend to have different comfort levels and beliefs as to how their wearing habits affect the watch and its need for service. I would simply state any watch that will be submerged in water (swimming pool or ocean), should be pressure tested every 18 months -2 years to make sure the gaskets are in tact and keeping it water tight.

Picked up this 16550 a bit impulsively this weekend. Pretty special watch as far as I can tell, I just couldn't walk away from it.

Which of these two do you prefer?

I think I prefer the top overall.

I am not quite sure how world watches are suppose to work but from a visual standpoint I like the top one better.  The bottom one needs a better picture as the shadow may be messing with the color a bit.

well I was able to try on a few different APs this weekend....at starbucks lol8[1].gif I absolutely loved the 15400. Fantastic watch. However, the Diver REALLY felt nice to me. I was able to work out a sweet deal that ended up costing me nothing out of pocket so it was almost impossible to say no smile.gif

Nice find.  Very cool piece of Rolex history with a rather short production run.  The white dial version (which is famous for turning cream color) is talked about far more often as it has more differences in appearance compared to a white dial successor 16570.  In addition to the different bezel engravings the white dial 16550 had white gold hands and hour markers.  On the 16570 the hands and hour markers were outlined in black for greater contrast, and its production run was much longer.  Only the bezel of the black 16550 seems visually different from the black dial 16570.  Still great find and I would definitely prefer a black 16550 to a cream/white 16550.  Again great find, enjoy it!

Maybe blasphemy here, but I'd prefer neither.  They are one of my least favorite Pateks in recent years.  But if I had to choose it would be the top one, I prefer the blue on the dial.

Congrats!!!  Great find and a great deal.  Love the Scuba.  Looks like it was delivered on a strap.  If it doesn't have the bracelet I'd call AP and look into ordering one.  It looks great on a strap...but I love it on a bracelet!  Again congrats Bro...awesome watch!!!

The top one, but keep in mind that the top one has much better lighting and a better shot.
