thanks!! if you make it to the end of this tl;rd CP post, you will maybe even see a pictar!!

this may be a bit on the long side for a relatively less expensive watch, but i hope you all will indulge me.

the truth is, i really had no intentions of adding another watch to my stable. as i said not too long ago, i am very satisfied with the watches i have at present, and for all the fawning and ogling i do here, its mostly over watches that are far beyond my reach, and are more something to dream about than actually consider buying with my available funds. in the under 10k region, where my watches sit, i was, and am, very happy. and i have never bought two watches within 12 months of each other before.

all that aside, the following transpired, and i really had no choice in the matter. smile.gif

we have a few offices in our area. i primarily work in bmore, but we also have an office right outside of DC, in a pretty posh neighborhood, where do a lot of very upscale buying. i am usually only there once a week, and only for a few hours. however, the last 2 weeks, my bosses were all on vacay, and i filled in in that office a few times.

well, one fine day, i was having a look see in the safe to see what we had bought lately, and i happened upon a rolex box. naturally, i opened it up, wondering what was inside. as soon as i opened it up, i feel in love. the blue dial was magnificent, and as big B pointed out, the red accents are imo, the perfect additional touch.

still, i never thought about actually buying it. then, later in the day, i was texting with my boss about the transactions i had done for the day, and i mention the ToG. i said it was beautiful, and could i have it for being a good boy? his reply was that i could have it for X, which was a price i never imagined he would offer me. all of a sudden, the watch was actually an option. the watch is in supreme condition, and the price was unreal to me. the though of having a DJ again made me all tingly.

and then, within hours, my old love, my SS DJ, white dial RM walked in the door. i almost cried. i went back and forth with the customer, and we couldnt agree on a price. ironically enough, he emailed me today saying he would accept my offer, and that he wanted to come back. assuming all goes well, we will be buying that tomorrow, lol.

at first, i thought if i was to get another rolex, it would have to be the one that got away. however, while i still do love that model, when i looked at it next to the ToG, and took any and all emotion out of it, it was really no contest to me for the following reasons.

1. the ToG is imo, a prettier watch. i love the fact that the bezel is WG, as opposed to the SS engine turned bezel of the RN DJ. the rotating bezel adds an extra touch, and lends to a bit more sportiness. id say function, but we all know i will rarely actually use that. and i LOVE the red accents.

2. i take dial color into consideration pretty heavily, and since i already have a white dial watch (the JLC) and a black dial (the panny), i felt blue was a better addition than another white faced model. and it really is a pretty blue.

3. most importantly, the year. the RN DJ that is on the table is from 2002 and the ToG is 2011. one of the main reasons i so stupidly parted with my DJ was the bracelet. even though i never had any issues with the old rolex oyster bracelet, it always felt very weak to me. very light. especially the clasp. it was nowhere near as sturdy as other brands clasps and bracelets in that price range. if i were to go with that again, i know id never be truly happy with that aspect, and the ToG has the new, and very hefty and substantial bracelet, with the new and very nice clasp.

4. although they are both 36mm, the newer case design lends to a significantly larger look, and i feel that looks better for my wrist size.

for all those reasons, i decided if i was to get one of these rolexes, it would be the ToG.

B - as to my comment about the blue black GMT, what i meant was as follows.

to outright buy the GMT, since that model is steel and as fresh as it gets, there will be almost no option for any significant discounts, and its not about to show up on the pre owned market either for a whole lot less. i think that this ToG will be costing me well less than half of what i could reasonably find that GMT for.

as to a trade type situation, i dont really have any interest in parting with what i have now, in order to help fund one. now that i will be adding this ToG, i know that i have some leverage if i ever decide i want to swap it out for a blue black GMT later. considering they are both rolexes, and kind of similar in their design and what they would be used for, that would be a much easier swap for me to make, than ridding myself of anything else i have at present. and if i decide i prefer to have the ToG over the GMT, then the issue is moot anyways.

due to county laws for companies that buy from the public, we have to hold the watch in the location it was bought for a full 18 days, so i cannot take possession of the watch until late next week. hence the lack of pictures, and why your words made my day where the watch cannot just yet. i do though have one pic i took from when i first gazed upon it.

and if anyone is still awake after my droning on, here is that pic. thanks for listening, guys! biggrin.gif

Great choice Stitchy! Congrats again. I really like the blue dial a lot. So far I've only owned 1 watch with a blue dial, but its a nice change from black, white, and silver that we have come to expect from most companies. The fact that you couldn't come to an agreement with that customer must have been a sign...the blue TOG was meant for you! Looking forward to a wrist shot next week!

we cant sell it until 18 days from the purchase date anyways, plus we need to have it polished. you have at least 3 weeks to save up and get yourself a kick ass rolex!

Firstly, Stitchy, where do you work?

Secondly, beautiful blue dial watch with red texts, and always interesting to read the reasoning!

Big ups, Stitches! Love blue dials.

Congrats, Stitchy!  I totally get the blue dial thing, and I agree that the little red touches and the bezel make it sporty, while the size and classic design keep it subtle enough for any use.  You really got a great deal there.  Nice write up too; it all makes sense to me. :)
