Movements on Fortis non-chronometer are valjoux 7750, maybe with some slight modifications. I think there are nicer watches for the money, but if you have seen them in person and really like them - go for it. I'd still recommend Oris, Hamilton, Stowa and maybe Tutima in that price range.

I must admit, I like a few Maurice Lacroix offerings, though this is a perfect example of a brand with an ill-defined direction. Last I heard they were bought out by some Asian conglomerate.

 

Their squelette from a few years back was beautiful, though too big for me

Agreed.  Here's my fave ML piece - can't believe I ever let it go - damn hard to find an enamel dial at anywhere near this price point:
