In general I'm not a fan of how PVD looks on most watches.  To me some of the details of the bezel and case are lost in the black coating, and sadly even on expensive watches, I can't help but think the PVD cheapens the appearance of the watch.   More importantly most look terrible once they starting showing some wear and tear.  If I didn't want the bright white of SS or WG case, then I'd try to find something in Titanium that I liked.

So far the only watch I've seen with a black-ish coating that holds up pretty well to wear and tear is Cartier's Santos 100 in amorphous diamond-like coating (ADLC).  A friend of mine bought one about a year or two ago and he doesn't baby his watches, and there are no chips, scratches, or break throughs in the coating.  Its far tougher than PVD.  They are no longer making the Santos 100s with ADLC, so the only way to buy one is to find one of the last new ones or go pre-owned.

Thanks Dino. I was swaying between a PVD coated and standard model Sinn. This helps.
Perhaps I can kick around a cheap model like a citizen to see how I like it.

Hey Rooster,

If I were going for a Sinn, I'd go with steel or titanium.  I think it makes the watch more versatile in terms of what you can wear it with.  A friend of mine had one of their chrongraphs in SS with matching bracelet and it was a nice looking watch.  Good luck and let us know what you decide.

So I'm curious to hear what others are looking at for their next watch purchase. You may recall I made a trip to a few local ADs on black friday and tried on a few pieces. So I guess the Q is: Whats on your short list?

1. reverso (undecided version; like the TT1931US, but also the regular white dial ultra thin version too)

2. vintage sub (undecided version; 5513, 1680, 16800, 14060)

3. NOMOS Zurich weltzeit (though id probably wait and see if they ever change the "heimat" on the dial)

PS: I agree with Dino on the PVD--don't do it.

Items on my short list (although no matter how the short the list is, I never reach the end).

1. JLC Reverso (either ultra thin or 1931 Tribute).  I almost purchased a Reverso in the past but ended up choosing other watches.

2. Black Dial Rolex Explorer 2 or Sub C (although sometimes I consider a vintage Sub.  I still have a green bezel Sub Date from 2005.

3. Piaget Altiplano...maybe vintage with a stone dial, or current manual wind with subdial at 10 o'clock.

4. Porsche Design Ocean 2000 vintage model by IWC or pre-owned doppel chrono from the late 1990s on bracelet (I don't care for the current versions).

5. Patek Gondolo (one of the larger more recent models, although I wish the movements were rectangular).
