Neither of them were really my thing, much too flashy. My grandfather never wore a watch so I really had no qualms about selling the lot of them.
I don't know anything about patek philippe but I had my suspicions about this one. Its very light and the strap is definitely not leather.
Not sure why he would have had a replica among his effects but we'll never know now.

My reason for asking if he had other nice watches, was often if someone doesn't generally have high end items, then frequently the "Patek, VC, Cartier, etc." that relatives find is frequently not the real deal.  Sure there are exceptions.  Also if someone never wore a watch, its odd that he would put good money into an expensive watch, but something can always be a gift from a relative or close friend.

I wish you luck with the current "Patek" you have, but I believe its a fake.  Ask the people on the Patek forum at www.timezone.com if they have seen one like that, or bring it to an authorized Patek dealer and they should be able to verify whether its a real Patek.

Best regards,

Dino

Thank-you, I will definitely investigate.

I sold a Reverso day / night a while ago, still regret it

I haven't looked a lot at PP watches, but would they make one where the seconds hand doesn't reach the second markers? Apart from maybe having been refurbished with unoriginal parts, is this kind of detail an indicator of anything?

You guys are way too polite... Even disregarding that you've never seen this model, which you would have. A Patek that size, (ugly) day-date cal and moon phase? An obvious fake. Nothing adds up. It even looks to be steel.

+1, have not seen many here, they make plenty of great watches.

The seconds hands on their chronographs always seem to reach the second markers.  However, I believe the second hand just comes a tad short of the second markers on a few of their watches like the Nautiuls annual calendar and a few other watches.  Either way, I'm not sure I'd rely solely on the second hand length relative to the second markers.  I just didn't recognize this as a Patek model within the last 15-20 years, and although I'm not a Patek expert I'm relatively familiar with their offerings.

Well, I was trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  I know a reasonable amount about Pateks and their collections of the last 15-20 years, but something could have slipped my memory.  As for a "Patek" being ugly, I'm not sure thats a sign of it being a fake.  I think Patek has made some great products, but they (like all watch companies) have made the occasional ugly watch  (such as 5489 trapazoid, Sculpture 5091, Cabriolet 5059, and the Neptune to name a few).  Sure there are less attractive watches, but for me those are lacking in the beauty I would expect from Patek (particularly the Sculpture watch).

Gents, for straps for the Reverso ultra thin I'm getting, where does one look online? I found ABP in Paris which looks promising. Any other sites/vendors I should check out for a 20/18 width?

Congrats!  ABP is great source for straps.  I have a few friends that bought custom straps from them for a Piaget, a Cartier, and an AP.  Another great source is Camille Fournet.  They supplied original strap to Lange, JLC and other companies owned by Richemont.  Not sure if they still are the supplier to Lange, JLC etc, but they also make great straps.  Good luck and congrats.
