Hehe I can't really blame you for that. I really think MontBlanc take their watch making more seriously than their pen foo.gif

In all honesty they're all probably esoteric and we are having a pointless discussion.

i know what you mean as far as slippery slope with all the boutique, small house watch makers out there, but i think journe separates himself, what i have seen from him is very classy, very innovative and very "haute horlogerie." i feel he is not the same as the others you mentioned, and handful of other similar very impressive but very, as you said, esoteric brands. again its all a matter of opinion.

I honestly have no idea why I'd put AP and VC a notch below, I just do.

Edit:

Oh I know: AP Royal Oak and VC Overseas are unforgivably ugly to me.

VC Patrimony and Jules Audemars however....drool.gif

in that same vein, while i dont particularly hate the RO or overseas, i know what you mean, but i dont feel that case design is the deciding factor of what put a manufacture in the highest echelon of watch making. personally im not a huge fan of the nautilus either, but that doesnt make me think any less of the watch maker that is PP. these designs are a matter of taste, many people love the look of the RO, it has a huge following. to me the deciding factors of what puts a manufacture at the top is movement quality, respectability of house, beauty of finishing, complexity of movement and mastery of grande complications. not case design. but, to each their own.

im just glad to come across other watch enthusiasts.

that first Mont Blanc pictured looks pretty nice... I'm not digging the face on the second one (altho' the back is sick!). But I also agree with Cylon here that the perception (whether it be the manufacture of more affordable watches, or pens) can and will influence the consumer. In much the same way I would also have a hard time kopping one of those MBs with confidence.

I was at their boutique a few months ago and I was blown away by their Villeret collection.
This is my probably my favorite chronograph at the moment. The watch wears really well, despite being 43mm... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

both cartier and mont blanc have come along miles in developing their watch cred. they have put out some fantastic watches, with movements developed and also made in house. they have proved to me that they are no longer just jewelry watch brands. i wouldnt put them at the top, but i do take them seriously and would drop real coin on their timepieces if i had the money.

also, the general lack of love for AP here saddens me. i think they are truly outstanding.

that last one is beautiful!

Let me be honest, I don't spend too much time looking at these brands because I doubt I am ever going to spend 20k+ on a watch (and that's being very generous--we are probably talking closer to 10k)

nice, the equation of time perp calendar is also outstanding, as well as many repeaters, torbillions, grande complications and beautifully crafted simple 3 handed watches.

Excellent point--I caught myself regarding the Nautilus. I feel exactly as you do but somehow it doesnt diminish the brand for me the same way I ding AP and VC. I guess PP is just bulletproof.

Not claiming to be objective here, its just how I feel, but all that youre saying here is valid and I totally agree with you about respect, beauty, complexity etc.

leads me to a question i often ask myself and others. if you had serious bank, and could buy whatever you wanted, would you spend 100k plus on a watch? how about a quarter mil or half a mil? or even a mil or more?

i would. no question. id wear it too.

I think Kors over Gucci. The person is not so much into flash or bling.
