I think we're at a sweet point where watches of all shapes sizes are accepted and have their place.

Is he a 'watchmaker'?

Well, he's just one man, so there's a limit to what he can do. But yes, he is a master trained watchmaker - www.clockmaker.com.au

Was this option not available before? I'm thinking to pick it up but not sure if I should pull the trigger. Does the rubber feel substantial or is it flimsy?

I  believe the orange "vulchromatic" option is new and that they previously had red, green, cream and blue. But don't quote me on that.

The rubber is vulcanized (molecularly restructured and strengthened) and I believe they have steel (or some kind of solid) inserts where the strap meets the case. It sits perfectly flush with no unsightly gap.  Moreover, the colored stripe is not painted in, but rather a separate, colored piece of vulcanized rubber that is set into the strap during manufacturing. For a simple rubber strap, there is quite a lot that goes into it. Mine did take a slight bit of tweaking with the springbar the first time I mounted it, but has since given me no trouble. I opted for the 316L SS tang buckle rather than the strap that would use my bracelet's oyster clasp.

It feels as substantial as a rubber strap could, but obviously not as much so as a steel bracelet. The quality is certainly very high. But these pieces are decidedly quite casual. So I suppose you'll want to ask yourself if you're okay with understating your Rolex that much. I love that feature of it, personally; really brings out the tool watch character. They're also low stress because they can take knocks, be used in saltwater, and scrape up against various surfaces with little to no damage.

Fiancé Hedonist does not approve of it, however. She likes the classic oyster bracelet.

Did someone say rubber and steel?

Hmm, tough call, but I think I prefer the latter.
