This is true.  Though to be fair, Kamakura shirts are great - so you'd be good with either.

Aye, so more on the dressy side, minimal complications, probably rose gold (we like both, but rose is cheaper) =<40 mm, as it's probably going to be one of those pieces which gets handed down. The budget is around that - we were looking at the standard Pateks, Vacherons and Langes, but the Journe really did stand out from your average dress watch without being too flamboyant.

I've never seen arguably the top three manufactures dismissed so lightly before. But then, I don't get out much in the rough and tumble world of high-end watch collecting.

If it were my money, I wouldn't look much beyond Patek or Lange. Especially if I'm looking to buy an heirloom. Patek is not just the canonical dress watch, it is a highly aspirational brand. Lange may become the same one day, perhaps when the time comes to "hand it down".

Well, unless mistaken, he is looking to buy a watch and not a brand.  Branding is of course part of it but the watch itself is first and foremost.  Buying something you don't like as much because of the name on it never made much sense to me.

I like that IWC - and any proud German can legitimately hold a DfB I think!  Also, for those talking about the size, the older 40mm basic Ingy looks great value to me.  I like it a lot.

Now, about that rose gold dress watch @mezentius: I agree there's nothing "standard" about PP, VC or (my Siren!) Lange.  But I get the point about wanting something with a little more individuality.  In which case, a couple more questions:

- you like rose gold and it's cheaper than what?

- are you OK with used?  If you want a less mainstream brand, expect nasty depreciation.  Which in a way doesn't matter if you want it as an heirloom, but is still worth avoiding just in case you change your mind!

No, I agree. Absolutely buy the thing you like or that speaks to you. I was just a bit taken aback at seeing three such superb manufactures dismissed so lightly.

Having said that, I was simply stating my personal opinion, as we all do on this forum. I do think there is value in a brand, in some cases.  Resale value, perhaps, is one parameter that is affected by brand. The more well-known the brand is, or the more closely the brand is associated with "quality", then it may well have a higher resale value in the future. The OP should, of course, buy the watch that appeals to him. But I have to assert that Patek and Lange, to name two, are simply not "your average dress watch"

Tried on a Pam 512 today and was surprised at just how much it spoke to me.

Gonna be a tough choice to decide which comes first...512 or JLC Reverso Ultra Thin. Both sing to me...

Very different things!  But I am in love with that 1940 case, too.

I vote PAM

Well, you know where I stand on the rose gold VC traditionelle...

Ah yes, I meant "standard" more in terms of "the usual suspects", and by "average" I mean the canonical dress watch design. No disrespects meant, of course. In fact, the original plan was to purchase something from the big-name brands (probably a Lange), but the dealer we went to being an AD for Journe threw a wrench in the works.

Mimo, RG was less expensive than the WG or platinum, but it's a minor point - we're not particularly inclined towards any particular metal; just that ceteris paribus we'll go for the cheaper one. Also, we're looking to buy new - depreciation doesn't matter at all, since we're definitely keeping it in the family!

Edit: I might add that since we're on the topic, I would still personally prefer the JLC MUT with the small seconds and the sunburst dial over a Calatrava or a Traditionnelle as the pinnacle of dress watch design. There's just something that is so perfectly balanced about it - only wish it were 38mm!

Swipe the card, dude.  This is no longer resistance, merely procrastination.

@tricky may I throw a 572-shaped spanner into the works?  I mean, if you can go to the price of the JLC then...
