I know you guys are all (or none of you) wondering what's going on with my international GMTII acquisition scheme. The watch has been purchased in Spain but it turns out it will be quite difficult if not impossible to actually get the VAT refund because my friend's flight out of Madrid is so early in the morning the customs office won't be open and she won't be able to get the receipt stamped. I saved roughly $1k getting the watch in Spain (well, almost $2k compared to list price + sales tax in SF) and would get roughly $1k back if we can finagle the VAT refund.

I'm also waiting on delivery of my Nomos (plus one for the wife) so hopefully I will have a group shot to contribute to the thread in the next week or so.

Is there a good site for finding values on vintage watches? I'm looking to purchase a JLC Memovox Cal 825 (1958) and am trying to research if I am overpaying. The watch I'm looking at supposedly has all original parts and has been very well maintained. The seller is asking $3k.

I looked up the watch on watchuseek. A really nice example but does seem a bit high compared to other ones I've seen. I'm always concerned on pricing restorations as well. I'd love to hear the experts chime in.

My thoughts exactly. Looks better than a lot I've seen and the seller seems very knowledgeable on vintage pieces but at the end of the day I just don't have the knowledge to know whether it is a good deal or not.

Also realized that it is an annual calendar rather than a perpetual.

For the most part there is no specific value set for vintage watches like that. Assuming we are not talking about very specific collectors pieces, like certain older Rolexes and Pateks, the value exactly correlates to what the buyer is willing to pay the seller in each instance.

Hence there is often a wide range in asking price for comparable models. People just price it based on what they think or hope they can get up, and negotiations begin there. Best of luck!

Had problems with the JLC Master Chrono so ended up returning it and getting the IWC Portuguese Chrono instead. Here is a wrist shot (although a low quality one)

^^ JLC Master chrono is one of my favorite chronos.  What issue did you have with it??

Yes, I liked it a lot as well. The watch started running really loud and was also getting condensation on the inside of the crystal. The AD said that sometimes JLC takes months to fix problems like these and couldn't give me a good estimate of when I would be getting the watch back. Obviously he could tell I was extremely disappointed that the first really nice watch I purchased was going to be sent away for an unknown amount of time and graciously allowed me to return it. I read online about others having similar service issues with this particular JLC so for my daily wearer wanted something a bit more reliable. I really love this IWC Port Chrono and just got over the fact that it didn't have as nice of a movement as the JLC. In the end I think that will make it more reliable, easier to service and better suit my needs for this particular watch anyhow.

I still plan to get a JLC but will probably go for a vintage Memovox.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. That IWC is no slouch! Congrats!
