Agreed. I love the oyster bracelet but wished it were a mm or 2 wider at the clasp for some of their models.

my only issue with some of the larger cased/lugged rolexes, is that i feel the transition from case/lugs to bracelet is a bit harsh, not enough gentle taper. but that is really a nitpick.

I've had my eye on this model for a bit. I like it more than the DJ and Omega AT. It looks incredible to me though I have never seen one in the metal.

Snowflake FTW here

I would go with the Snowflake.

Not my pics.

The snowflake is nice, but it's a little larger than I want. Also, while I think the Spring Drive is a very interesting movement, I wanted to get a "pure" mechanical piece for my first one.

Dino - ...I was just speculating that they might be harder to move right now due to anticipation of the new iteration after Basel.
Hard to say. In the past 2 months I've still seen people post, "Got the call" (from their AD and they bought a Daytona). Not sure if that is in areas where Daytonas and sport Rolexes have typically been in short supply. There are definitely people waiting to see what happens at Basel, but those are people that were never going to buy the 40mm and have been hoping for a 42mm Daytona for the last few years. Then there is the group that buys the outgoing version the minute they hear a Rolex is going out of production so they can get one of the final models produced. That happened when the old Sea-Dweller went out of production, when the old non-Date Sub went out of production etc. In the end, there is lots of speculation but only Rolex knows what will happen...and how long it will take. If they follow the roll out they did with the GMT-C, and SubC...if they actually do release a 42mm Daytona, we would see the release of it in all gold later this year, maybe a steel and gold version at Basel the following year, and then a year or two later an all steel version. Also remember lots of people were speculating the all steel SubC would come out the year after the steel and gold model, but Rolex made the public wait an additional year. I guess we will know what will happen in just a few months.

Thinking of going Grand Seiko for my first "real" piece. I was thinking of a 116200 Datejust, but the finishing on the GS is as good (if not better) than a Rolex, plus it'll be significantly more low-key. Thoughts? Has anyone here handled or own a GS?
.

Great quality, but to be honest I find their designs a bit dull, and they remind me of various Seikos from their regular line many years ago. But styling is subjective. I would also consider if you see this as a long term ownership experience, or whether you are someone that tires of things easily and hence you sell/trade items often. If you live in Asia, it may not matter in terms of service issues or resale value, but if you live say in the US, service will be a pain and you may have difficulty determining its resale or finding a buyer for them in a country where they do not have a very strong following. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Aside from the predictably pedestrian GS styling and that gawd-awful gothic font GS logo/script, IMO the snowflake texture dial will date in a bad way, not unlike the "linen" or textured dials from the 70s.

Final nail for me is the movement view through the see through caseback - they should just have covered that up with steel.

Dino - even in Asia they are not popular watches. Really only, at best, so-so popular in Japan as well TBH.

This is true. That seriously WTF!? blackletter font (twice, no less) the presence of Arial on the dials of most models make GS absolutely unwearable for me. On the other hand, I read books on typography for fun.

It is that kind of special madness that makes this thread so fascinating. :)

Oops, I thought it was Arial from other photos. Now that I can see the text clearly, it looks more like Akzidenz-Grotesk to me, which is infinitely better than Arial — but only because Arial rates a zero so quite literally any other choice except something like Papyrus or Comic Sans would also be infinitely better. I still have no idea why they'd use it in conjunction with a blackletter bastarda lettering style that's associated most closely with Cistercian monks in eastern France during the middle ages.

I'm sure it's well-made and everything, but this thing is a typographic mess:

Put my 18k GMT on a Hodinkee strap, and changed to an old brown bezelinsert with a nice shiny brownpurplish patina. I know for a fact that this patina was the result of a short period in the last owner´s oven, and not years and years of sun bleaching

I like the result quite a lot better than the previous configuration of black bezel insert and croco strap :satisfied:

I only own a quartz Grand Seiko because I am not really into those manual winding, how many jewels,...One thing I can say is the finishing on GS is BETTER than a Rolex (compared to my friend's Explorer II). The reason why I like GS is that this line is very subtle, but of very high quality.
Type no more, buy it

Fantastic. It was actually your photo of that watch on black NATO in this thread about three years ago that directly led to me getting a GMT. I bet it looks amazing on the wrist.
