This is my first post. And this is my first big boy watch. I know some are not big GP fans but this was a gift. I am not complaining.

@Belligero

no argument about Richemont but don't forget brands like AP and even GP do it too. Mermaid Mission? (which I actually find interesting)

Generally speaking special editions and limited editions don't usually sway me one way or another. Unless there is overly garish branding itself on the case (JLC Rossi, older IWC Top Gun off the top of my head). In this case I'm not sure I see why there is so much disdain. True, the main aspect of these partnerships is in the end to marketing/ recognition, but I don't see anything wrong with also partnering and aiding a good cause while you're at it. Are they hoping they can tap into the wallets of eco-friendly warriors who will plunge 10K down for a watch and feel like they're making the world a better place? perhaps. But most of the watches will probably be purchased based on their aesthetics/design/specs with the maybe the added notion of a charitable partnership at the least. My Galapagos is long gone, but it served me well and to be honest I bought it for the the design but it was a nice nod to know at least some of the resources was going to either conservatory efforts or least increasing recognition of those efforts. The Panerai 318 "brooklyn bridge" - to me a 'special edition' that was actually a deterrent IMO, (movement fiasco not withstanding)

Now, what you think of the new AT aesthetics - I'm not even going to guess biggrin.gif

Honestly, it is not the "special edition" aspects that bother me the most, it is the absurdity of the whole trip, and the incredibly loose tie-ins with the Galapagos. For example, with the JLC Navy Seals series, at the very least they tried to tie the watch in with the Navy Seals (whether they were successful is a different story). This just seems very silly. A special edition that echoes the feet of a blue-footed bird? Really? It just seems incredibly half-assed and gimmicky. As far as these things go, I would much rather IWC support the Galapagos islands (a worthy enough cause) than Batman. Or Jay Z. Or any other number of celebrities, causes, etc. But making it in Bronze and saying it harks back to Charles Darwin's ship? Seems like fairly... purposive inspiration.

The other aspect that bothers me is the combination of--(a) rising watch costs, and (b) lavish trips. Taking a three-day trip to the Galapos Islands with watch journalists simply cannot be inexpensive. And at the end of the day, it is just kind of overly extravagant. All of this really plays back to Bellis (I think it was Belli's) video about IWC's branding. I am just such a fanboi for old IWCs. Any this direction makes me sad.

This is not meant to be snarky, but who would you consider the "good guys" and the "bad guys" in the industry?
