Shanghai - huge congrats! Stunning watch and I'm sure your wife will love it.

I couldn't agree more, I love Govberg!

so the 5960 in steel is legit. Hodinkee has all the dets but it looks like its gonna retail at 55k.
Any thoughts on what this will do for the pricing of the (now discontinued) 5960p? It can currently be had for around 60k so not much of a price difference for platinum over steel... shog[1].gif

What a great start for Tudor and a really nice opening salvo for Basel. I will say I prefer the patina'ed markers and burgundy bezel of the Heritage Black Bay currently on the market, but this is a really clean and smart alternative. Really excited to see what else Tudor and Rolex have in store for us tomorrow.

I know this watch received some criticism when our venerable Frilly previewed it for us earlier this week, but I have to say, I really, really love the looks of it. With one caveat -- I think the bracelet is seriously underwhelming, particularly compared to the Nautilus, Royal Oak, and Overseas bracelets, which all look better finished and are more interesting. If I can have the watch on a strap, then I want it badly. Unfortunately, its out of my price range at the moment regardless and I am not willing to liquidate my entire collection for one watch. Maybe save my pennies and see what happens.

What do folks think about the new Nautilus? It doesn't work for me particularly considering how much I love the new 5960. But I imagine with its useful complications, that it will be a welcome addition for some.

A really promising start to Basel and much more impressed already as compared to SIHH. Looking forward to waking up to some more surprises tomorrow.

I think the red one is so distinctive it kind of has to be the Black Bay, but I'm liking the blue Black Bay too.  And it seems the blue theme on TWAT has coincided with a lot of blue coming to Basel:

I like this steel 1945 a lot, so much more interesting and lovable with the blue dial and strap.  And rose gold against blue looks awesome on the 1966, although the 3 o'clock date is like a herpes sore on Kate Upton.

As an interesting segue from the Black Bay, here's a real oddity that doesn't look like a Submariner or anything else.  And it's blue.  From Muehle:

Interesting back story on the three minute bezel markers.  I'm not sure it's exactly beautiful, but it definitely looks serious and practical, and I'm liking the oddness of it.  And did I mention it's blue?

(Stitchy and Frilly, blueness is coolness...)

I like it.  A lot more on the wrist than in pictures.  You would not be short of volunteers to give it a home.

does anyone have any recommendations on where to get a "cheap" omega speedmaster (moon watch). i really love that style.

i also just copped a seiko SSC081 for cheap. probably not expensive enough for this thread but i love the style.

Hey, speaking of white gold, looks it will appear in the form of a Pepsi GMT-Master II this year icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Oh, and yeah: New Sea-Dweller?

Was just wondering the same...what have they done to it?

And three new jeweled platinum Daytonas for the gangster/oligarch/Bieber market. The age of the $127 Rolex.  I think it's safe to say "not the purists' choice" in this instance.

I'm really interested to see how the red ceramic turns out on the "Pepsi II" (or at $30k+, I'm calling it the "Pepsi Pimp").

I won't lie - I keep an eye on the preowned 1931 market, but I suspect I'd earmark the funds for the IWC 5002 (BP) I've wanted for so long. They seem to be available quite reasonably when they pop up here and there.
Agreed. "Manufacture" has become an almost over-marketed term despite its validity.
Great article. I definitely ran through each stage and have settled on Stage 3. I had wanted a blue-dial Submariner since the 80s, but the general ROLEX=NE PLUS ULTRA attitude of some the owners I met turned me off the watch. I'd always chosen another option when having the chance to buy, but at some point I ceased caring about other peoples' lack of perspective (or poor comportment) and finally bought what I wanted. As a wedding present to myself. smile.gif

Another article that's been out there for a while, and that sparked a lot of discussion at the time, was Timezone's Inside the COSC from 2003:

http://people.timezone.com/library/wbore/wbore631733384647656250

It's a interesting article that sees an unofficial statement from Rolex that C.O.S.C. Certification is strictly for marketing purposes, and has the director of the Geneva C.O.S.C. laboratory admitting that a Rolex movement is " the most consistently precise and accurate movement tested by COSC."

I have not read through the full 2000+ pages of this thread, so if the Timezone article above has been beaten to death I apologize for the redundancy.

270.2.63 for me today:

Oh wow...very very great

I'm excited about the return of the SD. Not buying it, but I'm excited. I can't believe they made the Pepsi in white gold. It is only a matter of time until the first person with the means gets their hands on the Pepsi bezel and chucks it on a steel model.

And you know Rolex will never make in in steel.
