The Watch Appreciation Thread (Reviews and Photos of Men's Timepieces by Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breitling, JLC etc...) - Page 140

"Lets Start a War" - awesome.

A new addition to my collection. Not the most expensive, but currently one of my favs - a Poljot Aviator from the motherland!

Here is a shot of part of the collection - sorry for the odd pics

Big A. The Patek is quite a piece. I'm surprised that isn't sitting in a safe somewhere. That's the kind of piece one gets when they make their first million. I too have a Poljot - a Yuri Gargin chrono. Basically an older Valjoux movement; The 31366 is very accurate and a workhorse. Sadly, I bought it before I could discern the subtle differences in timepieces. Now I only see the lack of finish, sub grade metal, cheap hands and poorly applied numerals. Given that your collection houses several luminaries such an Patek, UN, JLC, do you find it difficult to wear the Poljot? Or do you limit it to strictly casual (e.g., household shopping at target) occasions ?

I had a long day at work and may have just bought this off of ebay after a few drinks: It's from the 1950s I think. Swatch bought the brand and uses it as a private label line for other department store brands but I have a goofy feeling back then it was a higher quality watch. I'm off to watch some Arrested Development because clearly I shouldn't be on ebay.

^ handwind?

If so, that's one hell of an ugly watch. I mean, ridiculously busy dial, look-at-me off-kilter chrono dials, mediocre colors, tacky fake exotic band... you name it, you have it.

I'll be generous here and give you $10 for it. Deal?

What do you thing?

I like the irony of wearing a PAM233 on a "tool" strap such as this ZULU & then pairing with a suite & tie!

You were buy-curious.

You seem quite serious about big watches. I've begun wearing some of my vintage pieces again, and man, watch feels like nothing. I'm curious where most of the weight comes from in modern watches. Probably case and crystal. Sapphire crystal is so much heavier than acrylic.

I really like the new "tool" straps. Pams are tool watches IMHO. Anything steel or over 42mm is a tool watch.

wow. I've never seen such a chrono subdials placement before. Cool!

Actually the subdial on top says STFU and the subdial on the bottom says BLOW ME.

Thanks good sir. And Guido, I think your panerais are growing on me even though I used to hate them about as much as Matt. I don't know if it's the way you take pictures or what, but you should compete against the Sartorialist.

I think the fit and finish of the Poljot is typically russian - rougher, more mechanical, fairly reliable, and (maybe) overly utilitarian. That's why I like it - it is sort of indicative of a time and place that is important to me. But I accept it for what it is - a $200 watch.

I don't wear it with suits, however. If I ever get to fly a MiG, I'll wear it then

Sweet combo. I've never thought about pairing a zulu type strap w/ a suit. I don't think I could pull it off. I still love PAM's on the brown leather straps (croc skin?).
