It's a good looking watch. I don't mind the faded dial, but I'm not sure about the green lettering.

Okay......apologies in advance for a longish tangent here.

I've been meaning to post these photos (and a few thoughts) since this past weekend, when I did a little more tyre-kicking (#mimo) around town.

Mostly I was reviewing some dressier pieces ... AGAIN ... since I have several sportier watches, and am not necessarily looking to add another one of those in the near future. (Though I've learned to never say never.)

For starters, one AD that I frequent, which already has a lot of nice brands-- has recently added Audemars Piguet. And I couldn't resist trying on the Jules Audemars Extra-Thin. (Inserting another apology here, for all the crappy phone pic
2122.png
wrist shots):

I'm not one to let a message board pick a watch for me, but do you have a favorite amongst this little group? Any strong likes/dislikes?

Maybe another watch you would recommend in this sub-genre/price range?

Aside from that, please resume your discussions....thanks for reading.
Wow, looks like someone had a lot of fun! The Jules Audemars Ultra Thin is stunning. The movement is iconic, and that rotor is amazing. If the boss has it in rose, consider it in white gold...if a co-worker who doesn't know watches asks, you can always say its steel

.

The Reverso is a classic. I think at some point every watch guy has to have one (myself included...I always get side tracked by other watches...but I see one in my future some day). I love the shape, the rotating carriage, and their watches are quite a bargain considering the workmanship. I'm not sure I'd say the workmanship is quite up to the standard of the JA...but that's a tough watch to match.

I'm a big VC fan. I like the Patrimony Traditionnelle, but I can see you not being in love with it. As Wes said, its perhaps too perfect making it seem a bit cold. I think the workmanship that goes into its dial and case are far more impressive than that of the Contemporaine. I also like its proportions, it looks right and feels right.

I know lots of people like it and this will probably make me the bad guy (Although if I were in an old cowboy movie, I'd probably prefer to wear black rather than white...so I'm ok with it). However, I personally have never been a fan of the Patrimony Contemporaine. I struggle to find something to like about it. I have tried it and I find the diameter to thickness ratio make it look and feel like a pancake on a strap. I also find it rather comical that its 40mm case diameter housed a movement that is only 20.65 mm. I suppose the use of an older tiny movement is the reason they have to hide it behind a solid case back. I find this way off the mark from the JA, especially in terms of its movement.

As for the Cartier, the Solo XL is a good watch. Its a heck of a lot less expensive, but its movement is simply out of its element among these other watches. If you want a Cartier Tank the current Tank XL ultra thin is the way to go. Its an F.Piguet ultra thin movement, and it has a closed back since its using a small round movement in a rectangular watch case. This movement IMHO isn't up to the AP 2120, but its still really nice and more competitive with the rest of the bunch.

I think you mentioned one of my favorites earlier, the Piaget Altiplano. I've said it many times their watches are often overlooked and under appreciated, but these are top quality watches and their movements are made completely in house. Its the dark horse in the bunch as it doesn't often have the brand name recognition even among watch people. However, I would say its quality and workmanship at leas rivals VC, and exceeds that of JLC. Among watch enthusiasts, I think they are less common than VCs and APs, but just outstanding watches.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing where this journey takes you. In the end, no matter what we like, the one that puts the biggest smile on your face is the correct answer!
Just a quick question, as I want to gauge the expert opinions here. Which is the more versatile watch, do you think, of the two watches below (not my photos)? I'm curious to hear...

Both are really versatile. For me the Explorer has more history, and I find it more attractive. In addition, the only non-vintage Omegas that really do much for my are the Speedy Pros. So my vote goes to the Explorer. Again, whichever one really puts a smile on your face is the right choice. Cheers!

Greetings my fellow watch enthusiasts. I'm looking at purchasing my first real watch and I've pretty much narrowed it down between the following:

Rolex datejust
Rolex submariner date
Rolex yachmaster

I rarely wear suits other than the occasional interview, funeral, and sometimes to church but I'm mostly in chinos and ocbd for work. Which watch would be the most versatile as a first purchase? Thanks.

Funny, but I'd recommend the Sub which is the one of those three I don't have although I do have a dweller.

I know it's kind of DB Blingy but i do still love my YM.

^ Thanks, Dino. I highly value your opinion.

I've already got the Omega pictured above, but intend to also get the Explorer 1 pictured above. I guess I just wanted to know which provides the more versatility to wear all throughout the year in different forms of dress, season etc.

@Keith T, get the GRUT. And the Patrimony Traditionelle.

Decidedly amateur opinion here, but I'd say the Explorer. I was actually just about to suggest it to @yesssir as a 'very versatile watch' alternative.

Interesting to see that Zenith reissued a version of this.

Hmmm, my tritium is turning yellow.

Id have to go rolex. Slimmer I think and generally more muted in appearance. I think that will allow it more applications.

Look what was available via the Rolex boutique at some city in Texas where I found myself today:

Picked it up for a friend who really wanted it. He will of course pay me back hahahaha.

There's another one born every minute.... :p
