Granted i don't own one, but i am in the market for one as a year end treat to myself.
I prefer automatic myself since I'm pretty forgetful. At first I hated manually winding watches since I was afraid I'd wind too hard and break the mainspring or something. But it gets easier.

IMO the best Panerai models are the simplest ones (I distinctly don't like their date models with the inverted cyclops) so I never really considered any of the automatics.

Cantabrigian: What is a sandwich dial? I like quite a few of the classic Panerai as well, though I remain a bit concerned that Panerai may be headed towards the Rolex route (high-end watches adopted by those with more money than style).

Come to NY and you'll see that they're already there...

I liked the 111 so much that I got one in spite of the somewhat outrageous retail price / lack of discounts and less than ideal cultural associations.

Sandwich dial just means that the dial is two pieces - a black disc with the numbers cut out on top of a lumed disc.

A very small detail but one that I like a lot. Adds just a little more interest without taking away from the pleasing simplicity of the face IMO.

I'm considering one of these two from http://www.mkiiwatches.com/ I love that the dials are "sterile", that is, logo-less. I'm slightly wary of the size, though, the "length" lug-to-lug is 48 and 50 mm respectively, which may be a lot on my puny wrist. Any experiences/comments as to price/quality?

Wow, a logo-less watch. Now that is an interesting twist. I like it a lot, especially the bottom one.

Both med MMT and the Stingray are beautiful homages to two of the most important military diver's watches that have been made (Benrus&Blancpain). The MMT (where I prefer the Type I on a NATO, from an estetic and historic point of view) is a lot slimmer and more "wearable" than the Stingray. The Stingray, on the other hand, is a very nice and chunky old-school watch (but I'd pick another hand/dial combo - the Type I looks best on the Benrus...) as an alternative for Panerai and the like.

After deciding than the Sinn 356 would be too small for my wrist, I decided to cough up some extra cash and get the IWC Pilot's 3717 (pics below - I intend to wear mine with a brown strap as well).

Unfortunately, there is a waiting list and I was forced to pre-order and now have to endure a ridiculous 9-month wait.

ET - why did you go for the new model vs. the 3706? I personally find the classic dial of the 3706 far more attractive.

I like the 3706 as well, but it really came down to a question of case size for me. I tried on both watches at an AD in Chicago, and the 39mm case of the 3706 just didn't do it for me.
