Can someone explain tome how caffeine makes your face look tired and saggy? Assuming you are getting enough sleep and the caffeine isn't there to keep you awake 20 hours a day, of course....

From the Mayo Clinic:

Almost everyone gets dark circles under their eyes from time to time. Dark circles under eyes usually are temporary and not a medical concern.

You may be surprised to learn that fatigue usually isn't the cause of dark circles. Instead, the most common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose is congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened (dilated) and darker.

Another cause of undereye circles is eyelid swelling during sleep. When you lie down, gravity can cause fluid to collect in your lower eyelids. This swelling may create the appearance of shadows below your eyes. In addition, dark circles can result from chronic skin conditions, such as atopic eczema. Dark circles can also run in families.

Over-the-counter products may help diminish dark circles under eyes. Look for skin creams that contain vitamin C or K, alpha hydroxy acid and kinetin. Treatment for chronic and severe undereye circles is directed at the underlying cause, if known, and may include bleaching agents and laser therapy.

I think regular exercise, of an enjoyable kind, keeps the face youthful. Ever notice how a lot of pro athletes look pretty smooth-faced into their older years?

Moisturizer is worth a try, but it doesn't need to be anything expensive or marketed for eyes or for men.

Most days I dab a titanium dioxide and zinc oxide-based sunscreen right under my eyes. The sunscreen helps prevent any sun damage from making the dark circles even darker, and the whitishness of the active ingredients, which might be a disadvantage anywhere else on my skin, helps brighten the area.

I think caffeine and alcohol are culprits in this 'cause they dehydrate you. I think as long as you drink enough water these things shouldn't affect you too much, that is as long as you're not going on benders every night.

I have a similar issue, but I dont know if I can elimanate those two things from my life.

call me old fashioned, but I enjoy caffeine and staring at a computer monitor too often. The tired look just comes with the territory; its a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

also, caffeine increases bloodflow, and increased bloodflow to the face increases the incidence of bloodshot eyes and bags or dark circles under the eyes.

In some televised situations, such as broadcasting, they wear makeup. Which isn't to say that exercise cannot have an anti-aging effect on the skin - it can. One would expect that being a professional baseball player or pro soccer player (with less protection and free-radical oxidation damage from running around) negates that effect.

Fatigue that is associated with dark circles might indicate dehydration, which is very common. Likewise, sleep-related dark circles can point to it, too. A dehydrated waking state is the norm. Sinus congestion can lead to fatigue, too.

Hats and sunglasses also protect the skin under the eyes.
