but that's where the phablet 7+ would come in, throw it in a bag on way to work (caseless icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif), but if i'm just out and about for a walk or whatever the next gen SE would be amazing, phone and text is all i'd need

speaking of which, more and more places taking apple wallet which makes it even easier to leave home without a physical wallet. and adds infinitely more possibilities for being hacked, though this business of skimming credit cards doesn't sound very nice either.

News flash: Bluetooth is not going to be the future of audio. Maybe it's more reliable now with the W1 chip, but it's still compressed and generally crummy sounding. Someone

The thing is that there are other options. aptX is one that has been out there for a few years and has gotten some traction. It's proprietary so Apple and everyone else would have had to pay a licensing fee which is probably why they didn't go there. There are other options for bluetooth such as streaming the MP3s themselves and letting the headphones decode them which shouldn't be that big a deal in 2016 considering how much work electronics is included already in the bluetooth headphones (maybe the W1 chip decodes mp3 and that's how Apple does it?).

Anyway, I think the real reason that Apple didn't make a push for higher quality sound is that most people just don't care. Convenience is a much bigger driver of adoption than sound quality when it comes to AV. We have seen it over and over and I don't expect it to change any time soon.

Unfortunately, you are likely right about this.

Agree with above. For most people, it just doesn't matter enough.

The fact that we're discussing all this sound quality stuff online already mostly puts us outside that target demographic.

But it makes sense why it's capturing so much discussion when it's priced at $159, which is where people buying headphones are starting to care about sound quality a lot.

For me at least, the draw is the convenience of no wires. I hate how often my earbuds get yanked or snagged and how I feel anchored by them. I've been toying with the idea of buying jaybird x2s but the airpods will do nicely.

Agreed. For that amount of $$$ in the wired world you can be looking at the ATM-M50x, Grado SR125, Beyer DT700, etc, for over-ear or the Shure SE315, Westone W10, or Ety HF5 for earbuds, all of which I'd be willing to bet will be better sounding cans than the AirPods. I know there's a lot of tech in them, but if they don't sound any better than the regular Apple EarPods, that's a pretty hefty price to pay. If the AirPods were sub-$100 I'd just sort of shrug my shoulders, but you can get some really great sounding wired headphones once you are in the $150-200 range.

Yep. Will be interesting to see how many of these they sell. Would have been cool if they bundled them with the iPhones for a small discount of $20 or so.

I tweeted at samsung to tell them touchwiz sucks and that they should just fire their developers and use regular android. I'm sure they won't change it on my account, but worth a shot...I got 2 free milkshakes from potbelly the last time I tweeted a company to complain.

My GF's SE is awesome. Unless you desperately need more power or specific features, I wouldn't hesitate to buy an SE today.

Heard an interesting theory yesterday as to what could be one of the largest motivating factors to the removal of the headphone jack. The theory is that Apple knew the redesigned 10th Anniversary model rumored for next year wouldn't allow for a headphone jack and that this fact would cause a fair amount of backlash. So instead of letting that backlash cast a shadow on their new design they decided to remove it on the iPhone 7 and get it out of the way a year early. Thus letting the big 2017 redesign shine with the backlash long behind it.

Besides making sense from a strategic standpoint, what I like about this theory is it in no way dismisses the reasoning Apple given. All the factors leading to the decision could well have been involved. Just not the ultimate deciding factor.
