Jr Mouse needs to move to a flagship android device. Apple is failing to meet his needs.

Not snark.

+1. It just seems like a huge missed opportunity. I get that the future will likely be wireless, but there is absolutely no benefit to making users either use an adapter, buy new wired headphones, or listen to compressed music via Bluetooth. (Well, benefit to the user I mean, there's a clear financial benefit to Apple, which is what this is really about.) I'm on a 6S and have sort of been doing the every-other-version upgrade routine so I probably will sit this one out anyway, but if Apple had come out with a new wireless format that could stream hi-res uncompressed music to high quality headphones, I would have jumped on it, even if it meant buying new headphones or adapters.

News flash: Bluetooth is not going to be the future of audio. Maybe it's more reliable now with the W1 chip, but it's still compressed and generally crummy sounding. Someone soon is going to come up with a way to reliably stream high quality audio, I had just assumed it would be Apple and by removing the headphone jack this would have been the ideal time to unveil it.

I'm sort of curious how other makers will respond. I wonder if Android devices will follow Apple or actively market against it? Also, I wonder any of the niche hi-res makers will try to come up with a better format now that Apple is clearly going the Bluetooth route. Makers of high-res audio devices like Astell & Kern and even Sony don't have much market share, but it will be interesting to see if they try to make a move now that Apple has completely abandoned the high-res market.

My biggest concern is the fact that I'll need to carry it in that stupid case. That's valuable pocket real estate.

This is probably old man mode.

A concern I have is that I often have my Shures in and clonk out for most of the flight and one side might have fallen out, but it's still physically connected to the phone and the other side. I'm not sure how the Airpods will do.

I'm glad they're trying this, but it's a non-trivial amount of money.

Lol @ GF complaining about the "stupid" case when the charging case is actually the one thing that makes the airbuds interesting and viable.

Where did I completely dismiss the case in its entirety?

The only point I was making is that the case takes up space and will surely be felt in the pocket. Nothing else.

I like the iPhone and iOS. I've been on the platform since the iPhone 3G and have been all around happy with it and the experience it provides. Just because I am upset that Apple needlessly removed the headphone jack and was not able to provide solid justifications for this decision doesn't change any of that.

I intend to wait for the new Nexus/Pixel phones to get announced but will more than likely buy the iPhone 7 in black. No other Android phones are even close to being on my radar.

I'm not looking for mind blowing sound quality or sound quality comparable to $160 shure ear buds. These will do just fine for my usage.

The other reviews I've seen for them say that sound quality is good and that volume output is highly improved compared to the EarPods. Bass is strong and highs are crisp and discernible.

+1.

Not looking for audiophile-level sound. I mostly listen to podcasts anyway. The simpler pairing is worth a lot to me—that has been my biggest gripe about traditional Bluetooth headphones. I know the EarPods haven't worked well for lots of people, but they happen to fit and suit me perfectly so lucky for me I guess.

For exercise and casual listening these are going to be huge. I think they'll sell really well. Don't underestimate the "signifier" cachet of having the latest Apple thing (remember the role of white earphones in popularizing the iPod?).

I've gone from Apple to Samsung to OnePlus back to Apple. Honestly the main reason I went back to Apple is because my wife and kids are on it so we can share apps, use FaceTime, I can see where the hell they are, etc. If you go Android, you might want to check out the OnePlus 3 though. Same Snapdragon 820 as the Pixel, but bigger battery with "Dash" that will charge a full day in a half hour, more RAM (6GB vs 4), unlocked, rooting doesn't void warranty, Sony camera, etc. My OnePlus 1 was a pretty great phone at the time.

The OnePlus 3 is a very, very nice phone. I use it at work and it's my favorite Android to date. That would be the one I'd get if I had to get an Android. The skin they have on it is fantastic, too. Doesn't at all get in the way of stock Android and even enhances it IMO.

You can swipe down on the screen anywhere to invoke notifications, for instance. Very convenient for a phone that big.

Needless is the wrong word. There were plenty of reasons that Apple removed the headphone jack, and if you'd like more details this article is a great read: http://www.wooji-juice.com/blog/headphone-hijack.html.

I'm not going to defend Apple's decision. I, too, think they're trying to force the issue into an ecosystem that isn't ready for it yet. The same thing happened with the 12inch macbook. What I will say is, that it seems pretty clear to me that the iphone 7 is partially integrating a lot of features that they'd like to perfect for the iphone 8, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Next year's iphone is expected to do a lot of new things, so why not have the iphone 7 take the negative hit on losing the headphone jack? Give the industry one year head start to adapt.

Also: if Apple wasn't willing to do it, who would? More importantly, which company would of done it where people would actually pay attention? Disruptive technology isn't always popular at first. But sometimes its necessary and I'd say the wireless audio industry definitely needs improvement.

Yeah, the oneplus 3 looks pretty nice although it is still bigger than I would like.

The sony X compact looks awesome too, except there are rumors that the fingerprint scanner will be missing from the US model, and sony phones in the US are always $$$

I'm patiently awaiting the google announcement...I'd consider an S7, but the Samsung just doesn't quite do it for me...otherwise I dunno. Time to get some wireless headphones?

It is fairly big, but the screen is huge and the phone doesn't have giant bezels on the top and bottom like the iPhones, so it's not as unwieldy as I thought it'd be at first glance.

I also have a Nexus 6P and while the software is nice, the phone is actually too big. It also feels cheap-ish and the phone wears like no other. The volume buttons also have a severe design defect wherein they get dented VERY easily. It happened to mine and it causes the volume controls to behave all fucked up. It's a well known issue. I don't even know how I dented it. It just appeared that way one day.

Also have a a Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Those phones are non-starters if only because the Touchwiz they have on there is godawful. Absolutely awful awful awful.

OnePlus 3 is the way to go IMO, though I'd love to try out the Huawei Honor 8 or w/e it's called.
