Unless something big feature wise changes over the next year or two, I could see the sales of the watches tanking as current owners realize they never actually use the damn things for anything meaningful.
I think the directionless Apple we have now purposely marketed it as a status symbol. With the highest end bands (I fully know who they're targeted at) they're twice or three times the price of a JLC Master or an IWC Port Chrono. You know, actually great watches.
The broader point is that they even offered those bands - likely so someone that is nouavu-riche in China or Russia gets one. It was completely outside their core competency which is great software combined with elegant hardware.
I have no idea wtf Apple can do other than cut the price of the Sport by at least $100.
