My last phone was an iPhone 5 that I had activated in September of 2012; Google announced that they would discontinue allowing people to use their Exchange network for push notifications as of January 2013.
Those who had activated their phones prior to that date are grandfathered in, which is why it still worked on my old 5. The problem is when people upgrade or change phones, they lose that grandfathered status and can't rely on iOS's stock mail app anymore.
The grandfathered status follows the physical device, and not the account, which sucks.
There's a workaround where you use iCloud and have your gmail messages forwarded to that email, but I don't like that solution.
