maybe an iPad mini off eBay for yourself and the wife and an amazon fire for the kids. normally wouldn't recommend the fire but if it's only for the kids to play games they'll probably appreciate the smaller size and it's tough enough to survive a few knocks and drops.

Would prefer to get just one. There are several minis available so I don't even know which is best. I have 250 in Best Buy gift cards and a 10% off coupon so will be looking to buy there.

Latest iPhone 7 rumors sound incredibly boring. Same basic design language of the 6 which is already the most bland iPhone Apple has ever released. 1 mm thinner. Flush camera. Two speakers. Spec bump. Big woop.

I still have hope the waterproofing rumors turn out to be true, but it seems less likely now. That would be huge.

They did something funny with the minis. Basically, the 2 and the 4 are the "current" models. You can still find the 3 for sale places, often at a clearance price.

I'd be hesitant to go with 16gb...32 or 64 is better if you are going to be installing kids games, putting movies on it, etc.

The mini 2 is pretty capable, and AFAIK, the specs are pretty similar to the mini 3--you might be able to find a good deal on a now-discontinued 3, which would get you 64gb instead of 32gb, but might not gain you a much performance.

The 4 is a performance upgrade, and would be 64gb rather than 32gb at the mid-level.

On the performance side, it is really more about longevity than ability to run today's apps. 3 years of iOS updates from now, the mini 2 might be struggling a bit, while the 4 should still be fully supported and OK.

Thanks for the detailed response. The numbering on the minis is ridiculous. Bb has the air 2 wifi 16gb on sale for 399 - worth pulling the trigger?

I want waterproofing as well.  Maybe wireless charging too.  Would be a shame though without waterproofing.

Isn't the 6s mostly waterproof?

I only have a 6, not 6S but I think the 6S made some good improvements in that area. I've heard of people testing it with quick dunks. Still wouldn't try it myself until Apple is confident enough in it to advertising it as a feature.

I've had water damage by accident before and with so many other manufactures adding it to their flagship phones I feel like it's time Apple did so too.

I don't think I'd go swimming with it, but a quick dunk (which fried my 4 battery) seems fine.

I have no idea what features I would find particularly compelling right now... Waterproofing would be nice, as would wireless charging. But whatever... These phones are just turning into commodities at this point.

I'd rather they fixed all the BS in the software - like make Siri not such a useless cunt.

Anyone use Polymail? I just heard about it today on the MVP tech podcast and they had a lot of good things to say about it. Signed up for a beta invite and I will report back once I get in.

https://polymail.io/

I'm finding myself getting more and more frustrated with SPARK. The app is so close to being great, but I find it often lags and fails to load email messages even over a strong Wi-Fi connection. I realize bugs happen and the app is still young, but speed is critical in any type of messaging app. Email is no exception.

Enrolling in the public beta for Mac OSX was a huge fucking mistake. It drops new updates every week it seems. And it never successfully updates when the computer is asleep at night as I instruct it to. Instead, I open the computer up to an 'update failed to install -- please try again' message every fucking time, forcing me to manually update it. This puts my computer out of commission from 30 mins to 1 hour depending on the update.

You can opt out you know.

I always knew you could opt-out, but I thought you had to restore from backup the production version. I don't have a backup so I thought I was SOL. Turns out I can just turn off the updates; that'll do the trick for now.

Have y'all seen the leaked images of the purported iPhone 7?

http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/13/purported-iphone-7-chassis-pictures-show-redesigned-antenna-lines-new-larger-camera/

Looks just like the iPhone 6 / 6s.. sans the antenna lines and the bigger camera. Will be so disappointed if this is what it turns out to be. The iPhone 6 schematic leaked 6 months prior to launch as well, so I'm not immediately skeptical with this leak, unfortunately.

Sigh...

I would honestly sell my AAPL stock if this was the iPhone 7 design. A lot of upgrades are driven by a new look and feel. This is just pathetic if that's what they consider a re-design. I would not expect them to beat sales records with this.

I had this discussion with Blair over email. The iPhone 6 by Apple's standards is incredibly boring design. I can't believe they are going to continue it with the 7. I realize there is only so much you can do with a thin slate phone design, but it feels like they are calling it in. I'll have a case on it from day one and all. Just wish they put effort into making it stand out.

The new Samsung Edge is a far more interesting design. As it most of what Motorola was doing and Nokia.
