The Apple Discussion Thread - Page 139

That video Apple did with James Jean, drawing on the new ipad almost had me convinced to get one.

Anyone use Google Keep? I'm a heavy Evernote user but am considering alternatives. The mobile UI is a bloated mess and the company seems to be on shaky financial grounds these days.

Never tried it. I used Google Notebook way back in the day and switched to Evernote when they stopped development. Never really been happy with Evernote either though.

Isn't Apple Notes way more robust with recent updates? Is it a viable alternative yet?

Never heard of it. Looks really nice.

I use evernote mostly for recipes.

Apple notes don't have all the features I need and I appreciate the fact that Evernote has a robust web client and is platform agnostic. The desktop and web client's are fine IMO, it's the mobile iOS app that feels bloated and need a UI refresh. It's too convoluted to get anything done in a quick manner.

I will say that the iOS extensions for Evernote have made it worlds better. I love being able to quickly send webpages and other data to it with a couple taps. The web client SPARK also helps Evernote shine.

I'm considering trying out the premium service with handwriting recognition. Being able to scan in notes from a Fieldnote type pad and have it turn it into digital text feels like the holy grail of note taking and to-do lists to me. smile.gif

In terms of other alternatives ,I heard Vesper is really nice but apparently they haven't updated it in a while. People are suspecting their may be trouble with development and that's more then enough to prevent me from dropping $9.99 on it. God damn Apple needs to allow free timed trials with upgrade pricing for apps. It's not excusable they haven't yet.

I bought Vesper when it first was released and deleted it a day later. It's minimalistic, so if you need something robust, it's probably not for you.

I use a combination of Drafts, Meteor, and Evernote on iOS and am decently happy with it. I love Drafts so much for capturing quick thoughts. Anything I want to keep later gets exported to Evernote, which is where I archive tons of stuff.  I use Meteor like Drafts for pictures basically. It allows you take quick "photo notes" but doesn't save them to your Camera Roll, which is great if like me you take tons of reminder photos you don't want to keep long term. Photos get automatically deleted after 30 days, or you can export them to Evernote or wherever.

Let us know if you try out Google Keep and like it.

Keep is slick although I haven't actually used it much other than to test it.

My evernote use is very low and it didn't seem worth switching over.
Basically I have a few things in there:
- Account info/Combinations to some locks I have to open very infrequently as well as some related facts. For instance, there is a note in there for my sailboat, it lists the combo to the lock for the boat yard, as well as things like the boat's hull number and parking space number. Or that's where I have the login to my friend's comcast account because usually I use mine (he has some extras) and eventually I remember to search my evernote app.
- Records of things I try out that I might want to buy. Mini-reviews of the different skis I demoed. Notes on sizing from shoes I tried on. Etc.
- Recordings of songs I was learning in my guitar class...but evernote was too clunky for this to be a good solution.

Its probably overkill for what I need, but being able to add photos to notes and the occasional tag was important and lacking from other options I had whenever I started.

Oh lord just saw a $20 increase in my verizon unlimitd data. Did anyone receive a notice from verizon before showing up on your bill?
it was all over the news months ago, it's still a way better deal for me than any current plan considering my usage
post #2080 of 3215

Just cracked my first screen on my less than a year old 6.

What are the odds apple replaces it for free as a goodwill gesture?

fuck! never heard anything from them directly. was in their store 2 months ago activating new phone, no mention. Was on the phone 6 weeks ago after they fucked up my plan, no mention. in the meantime received 3 reminders for payment and no notice. today called and the lady said yeah we sent you a notice. asked her to show some proof, puts me on hold for 10 minutes and then tells me supervisor will call back. nothing. fuck

why are they only charging $20 extra? why not $50, $100? its an arbitrary number anyway that verizon says will be put back into improving the network. fuck

It's meant to push some people out of the grandfathered plans you are not power users by charging slightly more while not being so high that people run away to other providers like T-Mobile will still offer unlimited plan
post #2083 of 3215

I just got an email that ATT is raising my unlimited plan by $5. Bastards.

This is what everyone gets for bitching about throttling.

Instead of a gentle push to a metered plan, looks like now you get shoved.

I just cracked my screen, too. Fell from my vest pocket as I was getting out of the car. Only have had it for a couple months or so. frown.gif
