I am going with my girlfriend to her university graduation ball which is black tie.

I dont know whether to hire a tuxedo, or buy a suit which i can wear with a bow-tie.
I dont really want to hire as I need a new suit anyway, but dont want to by a tux as i wont need it after the ball.

Is there anything anyone can recommend as an alternative to a tux that would look ok with a bow-tie? Any particular cut of suit etc?

Thanks for any advice you can give me

It has become (marginally) acceptable for men to wear black suits with black bow/long ties in place of tuxedos. If you are sure you won't *ever* need a tuxedo again (not sure how this is possible), wear that instead and hope no one will care/notice. On the other hand, depending on what size you are, you may be able to pick up a fairly high grade tuxedo on eBay for very little money; you can search the archives for more information on this.

Why do I get the feeling that some guys want a lounge suit which will be useful as semi-formal morning dress, formal morning dress, semi-formal evening dress, formal evening dress, job interview attire, regular work attire, sleep wear, and bathing costume all rolled into one?
