PSA:  I had to pick a different blue flannel for the blue flannel suit with patch pockets for FW16 (the Minnis version is discontinued and I like the Drapers one much more than the Minnis new version)

This thread really makes me wish I had a reason to wear suits.

At my last couple jobs even an odd jacket makes you look a bit too overdressed. I did wear them, but never did a suit. Here in Austin i've heard the owners of a few start-ups say that if someone showed up for an interview even in an odd jacket they would be viewed as likely not fitting in to the culture.

Ah, yes. "Sorry, your personal style doesn't fit with our culture of homogenous unconventionality."

I've had managers immediately reject people for that. Lots of managers will straight up reject people based on having worked in "stuffy" or "conservative" cultured companies previously regardless of what was actually done.

I have no doubt.....hiring practices, and the people who do it are rarely qualified, other than that they are the boss, to do it and often make rash, emotional decisions based on absurdity as do HR professionals.  I often wonder how many exceptional candidates are discarded because of some mental hangup of the interviewer.  But where I come from, if you are not wearing a suit on an interview, you might as well have not shown up.

Fucking this.

"I can wear whatever I want to my job!"
"Really? Check out this grenadine. Maybe pair it with some suede U-caps and a green hopsack sport coat?"
"Oh, no, I couldn't wear that. It'd be too out of place. I can wear whatever my bosses expect me to wear."
"...so, just like suits on Wall Street?"

One of my favorite parts of my job is that I could wear anything that NMWA sells pretty much any day I choose.

*Greg shows up for work wearing only items from the Leather Accessories and Bags sections of the site.*

Is the navy Drapers from the Lady San Felice and Flannel book? Looks a bit bluer than the Minnis?

I get it - and Im sure you can guess that I am not lol.  Ive never had much interaction with the tech environment so I cant speak to it.  Most times my place is "business casual" but even then, I know my bosses would have taken it as a sign of disrespect if I had not been wearing a suit for an interview.  It's a strange world out there.
