Recommendations for the best looking black Oxfords.

Hi there,

I went to Crockett and Jones on the weekend on Jermyn Street in pursuit of what would have been my first ever pair of black Oxford shoes.

When I arrived I fell in love with a brown shoe called the Edgware, the last was absolutely beautiful. However I was on a mission for BLACK oxfords, not brown ones, as I need this shoe to be versatile, it will be for both weddings and interviews. The Edgware that I liked had brogueing and was brown, both taking away from the conservatism required for interview.

I was told by the staff that their Hallam shoe, a black cap toe Oxford, was made from the same last as the Edgware. However it really didn't look anywhere near as nice as the Edgware and not only that, it actually looked like a different shape to me. I tried on both the leather and rubber soled Hallams, neither came close to the look of the Edgware in brown. I walked out empty handed because I was actually a little disappointed as to how the Hallam looked. From above, the brown Edgware had sharper lines, a slightly raised toe box and seemed more angular.

Please can someone recommend THE BEST black oxford that I could buy for £350.

P.S - I really like the bump in the toe box of the Edgware so would be looking for something that had that.

Thanks! smile.gif

In my opinion, the best black oxford is a Vass wholecut. You really can't do better and they come in at ~ £362 (490 euros). You also get your choice of last, but they come standard on the P2 (shown below). It has a fairly accommodating toebox.

You also have the option of lasted shoe trees

Sorry but i forgot to emphasise one thing. I need the shoe for interviews as well, and a whole cut isn't conservative enough IMHO.
It needs to be a cap toe Oxford.

Thanks for replying though with your thoughts Gauss17, appreciate the advice.

Well, as it turns out, they make one of those for the same price (and I think the same last)

Some examples:

Huh?

Your best bet would be to go with the Old English on the F-last or U-last depending on your preference; the F-last is a more conservative choice. Very conservative (as the picture above shows) and like mentioned above, they come with shoe trees. I just received 2 pairs yesterday in the U

Well at least we agree on the brand haha. I disagree on the last choices, but hey, pick whichever you like.

If you like the Edgeware why not just get that in black?

That's right, it needs to be a cap toe. Also the Edgeare has a medallion on the front, which I personally think is not conservative enough.
