Because that makes sense: show people that your crazy ideas are actually reasonable by saying something crazy and then insisting it's reasonable. That's especially gutless since the people you are making a fool of here are the ones that supported you (i.e. your social justice buddies).

FWIW, I don't really think this Shanesha woman should go to prison. And if the facts are as reported (big IF) then it's really unlikely that she would. Most likely she gets time served and some parenting classes, which I think is about right. CPS probably isn't going to rush her kids back to her, but hopefully she gets some help somewhere and gets her kids back and in time puts this behind her. And I will go as far to say that if I were the cop, I might well have given her a stern lecture and a warning and sent her on her way, if she seemed to have been honest and genuinely chastened. of course I would never be a cop.

The tenor of her supporters, though, is just ridiculous. One of the repeated themes is "Conservatives always tell poor people to get a job and then when this woman tries she gets arrested!" I think I can speak for the population of people who are in favor of job-getting when I say "We didn't mean leave your kids to die in a hot car in order to do so." I didn't actually think that needed to be said but apparently here we are.

This is one of those cases where I'm completely withholding any opinion until I have the back story verified as there's just so much that does not add up here. It's also very sad that a woman in her mid-30s would have two young kids and be homeless.

To the reaction of her supporters they need to think a bit (yeah, I realize that's asking quite a bit). It's not conservatives that have created the CPS system we have. It's not conservatives that employee an army of social workers and case managers in an attempt to run the lives of other people and use their kids as bargaining chips to get their way.

Leaving the kids in the car is completely negligent and really gives you legitimate reason to believe she is not qualified to take care of them. There is room for mercy in the law and she will likely get it, but you can't just let her off the hook, even if she is that most sainted of creatures, the Woman of Color (tm)

Kids are better with a parent, are better off than without parent at all unless there's abuse or real negligence. Of course she should be set free to take care of her kids, I think she got the point not to leave them in the car again.

I agree that you should err on leaving the kids with their parents rather than sending them into foster care, and that this woman doesn't need to be locked up if this is her only crime, but I don't agree that there's no real negligence. I think she is very lucky that neither of these kids died,

Obviously some social worker should have a look at this to see if kids are taken care of properly. If that's only negligence she's guilty of, than let her go and send social worker once in a while don't make it more difficult than it should be. Generally I believe that only in extreme cases kids should be taken away.

Can someone tell me what the Colbert flap is all about in a precis?

As to the woman leaving the kids in the car: I don't think it's all that bad. The windows were cracked? It's not that hot out. Not the smoothest move but if you're homeless and trying to get a job and have nobody to turn to it's plausible.

Which makes me think that we don't have all the facts to this story wink.gif

A car sitting in the Arizona sun with the windows barely cracked is going to get stifling pretty quick.

Laws usually do not get written to cover particular instances but rather general conditions. I think we can all agree the general conditions in Phoenix are such that it's good to have laws against leaving little kids in locked cars. Cops were just doing what cops do, i.e. apply the law as written.

Colbert: he and his Twitter account were doing their usual thing of looking like stupid, racist conservatives to mock people they feel need mocking thusly. Stupid chic of Korean ancestry took offense at the satire and called white liberals racists (not gonna like, she's right). Stupid chic was interviewed and it became highly apparent she's stupid. Stupid chic says she was just trolling everyone, because you see, she's a "writer." By "writer" she means she has a blog and twitter account and no gainful employment.

I judge the chic to be stupid.

She's said she's of Korean ancestry.

She said she took offense.

She said this shows white liberals are racists.

Not sure where the confusion is.
